I'm somewhere between these two viewpoints.

I love the way Ian McCulloch sings 'there's beauty in doing nothing at all'.

It's Not War Just the End of Love - 3/5 (Meh. I totally understand what Nicky was trying to say but I'm not convinced it's there)
Postcards from a Young Man - 5/5 (Fantastic) Some Kind of Nothingness - 5/5 (Even though I found out yesterday McCulloch was singing lyrics that sounded better misheard - that it was 'The Tree' instead of 'The Truth' meaning 'more to you than love' and instead of 'Is Beauty pure or nothing at all', 'Beauty doing nothing at all' - I still think it is a great song) The Last Descent - 5/5 (I totally get this. 'My baby teeth are gone'. Great stuff) Hazelton Avenue - 4/4 (It's about Nicky's love of staying in bed so the highest it could be is a 4. It is the best Nicky's love of staying in bed song there could possibly ever be though.) Auto-Intoxication - 4/5 (Nice and reasonably coherent, though unfortunately the first example of the 'Slightly Vague Whingeing' song on the album) Golden Platitudes - 4/5 (See above) I Think I Found it - 4/4 (That's nice James. See Hazelton Avenue) A Billion Balconies - 5/5 (Great. Sums up my life. While typing this I watching a Star Trek Deep Space Nine episode review on YouTube. For the second time) All We Make is Entertainment - 4/5 (See Auto) The Future... - 4/5 (Godfather III really isn't that bad also See Auto) Don't Be Evil - 4/5 (See Auto) Thirteenth Song - (Missing. Badly needed. Don't Be Evil just not an album closer) Vague whingeings about modern life plus nostalgia means this album is unfortunately DAD ROCK. Lots of good stuff on there but ultimately not quite up to standard for a Manics album. 3/5 (Not an average score for all of the songs just the feeling I have the next day) |

I'm a big fan of his vids, cos I like his gentle mockery of TNG and DS9 (my favourite Trek shows) and his outright assault on Voyager and Enterprise (the very worst of Trek).
Back on topic now...Manics, etc.

Right.
This page took half an hour to load up. (My bad) And all I'm going to say is what has been said in other threads basically... Got the album this evening. Only the standard sadly. Well for now anyway. I really like it. If you had an arguement with people in the past over "My Manics are better than the bands you like" then I hope you didn't choke on too much of the shit you had to eat! It isn't the most original Manics album. Would have made a good summer album. I did take pictures of myself listening to "Hazelton Avenue" (and sorry Karen, it's a "sort of" thumbs up!) which I'll post on the library computers this Thursday. I haven't checked the "Music the Manics Have Cribbed" thread, so I'm too late for the "Golden Platitudes"/"Fake Plastic Trees" bit. I look forward to listening to it for the rest of the week, but it wouldn't be a Manics thread without the moaning would it? So: "The Descent (Pages 1 & 2)" It sounds Oasis-y, but like an Oasis demo. For a polished sounding record it's amazing this track doesn't have the punch and power of Oasis, despite it being note perfect. My biggest bottom lip twister is the lyrics. I'm not comparing it to JFPL or THB, but they really are rubbish! SATT, ITKZ had perfect lyrics (Yes, even "Underdogs") but on this album... what the fuck happend? "Pointless jobs lead to pointless lives" I'm not having that from a workshy fop! And how dare people use the internet to communicate with each other rather than worshipping at the feet of the band? The nerve of it! "Auto Intoxication" shouldn't really be on the album as well. It doesn't really fit in with the rest of the album. (An album full of "The Future Has Been Here 4Ever" I'd love btw) There will probably be more threads in the album I can pull on and unravel on future listenings... But for now, leave the lyric booklet, which is the most toxic, foul smelling lyric booklet they've done, (Yes I smell lyric booklets! What of it?) in the CD case and you have the best Manics album ever. It's when you look closer and read into the record... it doesn't completely fall apart, but it does lose a lot of power. But you people want ratings out of ten, don't you? Well I won't! You'll just have to re-read this post and misunderstand it! At least Nicky is taking his musicianship more seriously. So he escapes the "what are they paying you for exactly?". And they are obviously going to "rebel" against this record with the next one, rather than take the better ideas and extend them? (The gospel, the guests... hold the strings) Too early to rank it to the others. Need more time. Was checking my watch during "A Billion Balconies Facing The Sun" and "Don't Be Evil" isn't the anti-climax the reviews said it was. There isn't a single b-side on CD one of INW(JTEOL) that I think should have been on the album in place of another track. Anyway, Grim Adventures Of Billy And Mandy has finished so I'm off for the night. |

What??? SATT lyrics were pretty poor... The ones here are much better, in fact some of Nicky's best in a long time.

I like some of the preachings of this one, it doesn't come across as whinging to me, I get what they're saying.
