No, "baby" is slang for an attractive woman, like "babe". Also children (usually girls) are sometimes called it by their parents as well, usually up until their twenties but sometimes for all of their lives. My mum still calls my 17-year-old sister "baby".

It's not a literal baby; it's both a term of affection from the then-late-thirties Manics and the next generation and it's crossing the gap between them, which is who and what the song's about.

I'm sorry but I do know what baby refers to in this case, believe me. and if it was a reference to an actual baby's hair, then what would be the harm in that?

What I hate about it is it's a shit lyric, pure and simple....
