I think it's just luck on the part of customs whether you get caught or not.

Never Want Again sounds like it's been taken from a master tape; there's a tiny drum flourish before it starts - don't think that was in the original? Same deal with Starlover; a bit of bass clunk. The album itself sounds... less washed out. It's still midi drums as far as I can tell, though I don't really have an ear for anything more complex than bam crash wallop.
ETA: Methadone Pretty sounds a LOT meatier. Well, GT hasn't magically become a well-produced album, but it sounds a little less murky to me... Last edited by Fiver; 18-06-2009 at 22:58. |

its also good to have well mastered versions of motown junk and suicide is painless as before the only versions i had are on FD and that album is mastered horribly. |

Tennessee especially sounds much better. I used to have to turn up the volume whenever that song rolled around. I think it was mentioned a little way back in the thread, but the Heavenly version of You Love Us is the edit - no backing vocals, slightly different solo.

When remastering something you can't, for instance, replace the midi drums on GT with real ones. That would be a remix, much like the US mixes of selected GT tracks. To my understanding, for a remaster you can only work with what you've already got. It's true that apart from volume levels I can't detect any notable changes in sound quality on these versions of GT and GATS, but then that was the same for the THB and EMG remasters for the anniversary editions. If only we had these when I regularly made Manics compilations and spent hours trying to normalise everything perfectly with Nero's tools, burnt the disc, realised it didn't quite sound right and repeated the process about seven or eight times. |

Listened to the whole thing this morning - it sounds much better, though nowhere near as good as the Stars and Stripes tracks. It is, however, very nice to have good quality versions of Starlover and Never Want Again, so it was a good find. Looking forward to hearing the other ones.

Wait a minute... are they really midi drums? I assume you're at least talking about drum pads that Sean played rather than someone sitting there with an Atari ST creating each beat.

Gosh, that's a shocker. I think Sean should go into the studio with the masters and record *real* drums for the album.

I can't listen to that record, really. Motorcycle Emptiness, You Love Us...great songs, crap sound.
