I think the closest analogy would be the situation of Quebec within Canada. There are people within Quebec who see themselves as seperate identity, might prefer to say they are Quebecois rather than Canadian but legally Quebec is a region (province) within Canada.

Edit: just realised Takk has said the same thing.

Scotland's not a region within the United Kingdom though. Scotland is a nation within the United Kingdom.

I know, but for the purposes of explaining it, it's close enough, not a perfect analogy.

Yeah boooiiiiii! Someone knows their history and I for one am impressed! I'd be willing to bet not many realize (or care for that matter) that Canada was once a colony of Britain. Why up until the mid-60s, the flag Canada used were both the Union Jack as well as the Red Ensign.

Well, to be fair to Looke or Takk, it probably wasn't just my "location" that set them off, more likely the fact that I did say that I wasn't from the UK.

I think the word you're looking for is "provinces", but yeah, I totally get what you mean. I just think from my perspective it's a little more clear-cut then then the UK. Like I said hun, didn't mean to offend anyone here (so sorry if I have), I was only curious and I think you fine folks set the record straight and I appreciate that.
