Aye, same. I miss buying picture discs, got myself some really nice looking ones by various bands when I was younger. Think the last one I got was the pizza one mentioned in the "cool packaging" thread.

I mean for all I know it may sound so overtly poppy because its an attack on commercialism and/or the current state of music. I mean I know Nicky said to expect pop but this is just much more than I expected. As of now its a 5 out of 10 for me, maybe even a 4.5.
I knew I'd eventually find a comment that encapsulated my views on the single perfectly if I read through enough of the thread. Tbh Manics songs in this vein always have their work cut out with me. I do love TGWWTBG, but that has a kind of, well, manic energy, but this sounds like it was written with MOTD Goal of the Month in mind...

It's standard Manics fare in my book, I like it more than the lead off the last album. (Your Love Alone I mean not Jackie Collins)

Well over 80+% of people here seem to think the song is average or better, and 50% seem to think it's great or amazing, so hardly the minority.

Hah. I bet even die-hard Morrissey fans don't get this disparaging when he releases new stuff, and he's shite.

THAT. I wish people wouldn't try to portray a light-hearted comment as anything more than it is.

I find it a bit dissapointing really. I'm aware that they said this was their 'last attempt at mass communication" ie their final pop album. But It neither scales the anthemic guitar pop heights of EMG, or the bombast of glam rock of GATS. Worst still it just seems quite throwaway in keeping with that dreadful duet they did with Nina from the Cardigans that everyone except me liked so much.I wouldn't be frustrated if I didn't know they could do better....

Daiiimn. And there was I in 2007, thinking Your Love Alone was the poppiest thing the Manics ever did. I guess not

I must say, I'm really, really surprised. Don't know if I would like a full album of songs like this, but it's a really nice song. and really PERFECT for the first single of their 10th album with which they wanna go as copmmercial as possible. I think they will succeed in that with this single!

Personally, for me there's not enough guitar sound for my liking. And the strings are too much on the foreground. Good to make it a hit single, but I prefered the sound on SATT a little more then. Anyway, I'm really lookin forward to the new album and wishing them all luck with the first single!!

Following all the 'mass communication' talk, my expectations weren't high. I listened to it twice and then moved on to something else. Certainly the first time I've done that with a new Manics single, which felt like a shame. I was initially quite excited, as the intro almost has a McCarthy/C86 feel to it (not without that Manics polish, inevitably) but then those strings come in...

However, that was a good six hours ago and since listening to it, I have been pottering around half-singing "it's not war, just the end of love" to myself almost constantly. Despite my disappointment at what seems like real laziness on their part, I'm still a sucker for a catchy chorus.

I fear the sound of those strings live though.

But why would I bugger off after stating FD is so great for news!? Relax, that was a "pinch of salt" comment taken way too seriously. Manics album and tour imminent, that is why I'm here. I'm excited.

Was really unsure on first hearing it. It has since grown on me a bit and I am looking forward to hearing it live. I don't know if it is just me, but it seems to be lacking the conviction and emotion that have made the Manics stand out.

I know that it is totally irrelevant, but I can see it getting caned in the media and the Manics getting the kind of hammering they did circa Lifeblood. I was genuinely interested to see what this album would be like, but if this is anything to go by then I am beginning to wish that they had called it a day after the last album. They seemed to have come full circle on that album and it would have been a fitting way to say goodbye.

I like it, I do. I think it will grow on me more. I listened twice, so far. I had to check it out on YouTube. Why do they at least not have it streaming on their site? I feel left out in the U.S.
