I love Nixon, but on an album that was always going to be a difficult sell to fans due to its production, the fact they went and put out the one actual synthpop song - on which James doesn't even sound like James - as the lead single was utter fucking madness.
Singles aren't a market for them anymore, so it's mostly just a case of what might get some airplay on Radio 2 or daytime SixMusic, and Orwellian makes total sense in that area. edit: literally managed to start a new page with the phrase "I love Nixon". Well done me. |

Orwellian is the single bait that'll get played on your radio 2s and such like but it does that classic manics trick of coldcocking you with a somewhat gentle tune tied to lyrics where everything is fucked, it reminds me a lot of lifeblood in that sense. I say gentle tune but there is something off-kilter and discordant with the music which i hope there is more of on the album.

A Short Interlude From Me To You
With the usual new-release boost to visits and lots of old familiar names, an alternate and personal message to you all in the context (and ideally to the tune, if you like) of the new song, and where we are and
well I think it speaks for itself

I'm getting confused with the album title "The Ultra Vivid Lament" and former 4AD band from the late 80's Ultra Vivid Scene. Very close to each other. I wonder if the title is a nod to the band in some way. Probably not.

Actually works really well as a punk pop thing. Better even. Having listened to it a dozen times now, I think from an objective viewpoint its certainly an above average post 2000s Manics single/album opener whatever - improved further by its unashamedly du jour political lyrics. Which are surprisingly rare these days with Manics singles. If we cant have proper rock/punk guitars Im glad theyve at least done away with the big anthemic stuff rock concert sound of the last album. Not what I was expecting production wise, but I like it.

JDB said on the radio it was a reflection directly on the coronavirus lockdown - having a lot of freedoms taken away from you and having some of the simplest pleasures under your nose.

I was surprised the tangent the lyrics took. I was expecting the title to refer to surveillance capitalism. Or failing that, the debate on limits of free speech which has, righty or wrongly, seen stuff like the leader of the world's strongest democracy getting silenced and cancel culture etc. Instead seems it's just about conflicting narratives and being unable to trust what you read. Important sure, but it's a problem as old as human history.
