TIMTTMY is the first Manics' album I've heard so it'll always be number one for me, like Salvador Dali said 'Everything alters me, but nothing changes me.'

Found it massively hard to split many of their albums in terms of quality.

Anyway:

The Holy Bible
Everything Must Go
This is My Truth
Journal for Plague Lovers
Resistance is Futile (?)
Futurology
Rewind the Film
Send Away the Tigers
Postcards from a Young Man
Know Your Enemy
Generation Terrorists
Lifeblood

I'm really surprised how high resistance is appearing. I don't hate it just think it's very mediocre

I know from long time lurking that SATT being so high and TIMTTMY and LB being so low might raise some eyebrows, but I genuinely love SATT, it's a great pop rock album, lean and to the point, and with all the wonderful b-sides, most better than some of the album tracks, it really was a great little period for the band.

TIMTTMY has no real crimes to answer for (though I hated it when I heard it for the first time at 19; it's really grown on me as I've grown older). I suppose I see it as lower-end manics because, along the lines of what James said when he rated their records, I like my manics music to have a bit more punch to their sound, and Truth is rather pristine to my ears. That, and its a very melencholic record, one I've got to be in the mood for. It does seen like Nicky's cofessional record, although in an oblique way, and as bizarre as it might sound I find it more uncomfortable to listen to than THB or JFPL. Maybe because Nicky wrote in a more plain way than Richie, it hits home harder.

Lifeblood I like the idea of more than I enjoy listening to it. There are some very good songs on it, but I tend to lose interest during the second half where the weaker material is. I do think Askew Road should have followed Cardiff Afterlife at the end; it would have given a great sense of drama and climax.

Re-assessing my list of 2 years ago. Futurology drops down, as my personal taste has found a fondness for KYE again, and Lifeblood moves up a spot. As the newest album, I've got a lot of love for RiF, although (like Futurology) it'll be interesting to see if I have the same opinion of it in 2 years. That said, I do think that it's streets ahead of anything they've done in the last decade, which belies the idea that only their best work came from the early 90's.

A reminder on the splits, the top 5 are albums I can throw on almost anytime and enjoy start to finish. Critically, or just in my head, they are all classics for a variety of reasons. The middle ones all have amazing moments, but either through excess flabbyness (KYE) or some killer offset by filler (SATT) they don't quite have the strength in depth of the top 5. And the bottom 2 have never really floated my boat, sadly.

My ranking today... a few changes below the top three. Most-recent-album syndrome might mean RIF drops later, we’ll see.

For 2018 I’ve gone with dog analogies. Woof!

- Best-in-show at Crufts, watch them strut around with their heads held high and their blown-dry hair.

1. Everything Must Go
2. The Holy Bible
3. Lifeblood
-------------------
- Old faithfuls, found Timmy when he fell down a mineshaft. Good dog! Yeezz, who’sza-guud-doggy!?

4. Resistance Is Futile
5. This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours
6. Futurology
7. Rewind The Film
-------------------
- Will play fetch competently on a good day, but barks at the postman. Sit! No biscuit if you don’t sit!

8. Gold Against the Soul
9. Know Your Enemy
10. Journal For Plague Lovers
-------------------
- Daft, slightly cross-eyed, pees on the carpet too regularly, but still so adorable most of the time. Fenton! FENTON!

11. Postcards From A Young Man
12. Send Away The Tigers
13. Generation Terrorists

So over four years ago I made the following list:

Futurology (8/10)

Rewind The Film (8/10)
Send Away The Tigers (8/10)
Postcards From A Young Man (7/10)
The Holy Bible (6.5/10)
Know Your Enemy (6/10)
Everything Must Go (6/10)
Generation Terrorists (5/10)
This is my updated list with the inclusion of RIF and without a score attached -

1. Lifeblood
2. Send Away The Tigers
3. Journal For Plague Lovers
4. Resistance Is Futile
5. This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours
6. Rewind The Film
7. Gold Against The Soul
8. Postcards From A Young Man
9. Generation Terrorists
10. Know Your Enemy
11. Everything Must Go
12. The Holy Bible
13. Futurology

So, in the last few years I've completely gone off Futurology, apart from Walk Me To The Bridge, Dreaming A City and The Next Jet to Leave Moscow, it's a poor album overall (in my opinion, of course). I'm totally bored to tears with EMG and THB.

I think Lifeblood has solidified itself now as my favourite Manics album, even if it does contain probably my most disliked album track (Glass Snot) - but it does have Cardiff Afterlife on it which has been my favourite Manics song for the last 14 years. SATT doesn't have a duff track on it but it doesn't have the same edge as Lifeblood overall. JFPL is great, but has a couple of poor tracks that I just can't get into.

RIF is a really good album but I find myself skipping Vivian, Dylan & Caitlin and Liverpool Revisited (and Broken Algorithms), but the rest of the album is absolutely superb with special mentions to Distant Colours and People Give In.

The rest of the albums on the list will always fluctuate up and down the middle order, I've always admired TIMT and GATS so they're much more likely to stay in the top half of that bit than say, GT or KYE.
