Canada used to be about 7 or 8 months behind for 'Coronation Street'. The ep will most likely hit the shores here by spring 2015!

Personally, I thought it was fantastic, as a symbol or gesture against "US world domination", or whatever you wanna call it. I was 18 then, so of course I'm more politically aware today, and definitely not as enthusiastic about it anymore. I understand and agree with the reason James mentions - but I still think the reason is strange. I mean, even before they started the trip they were given stick by press/fans/pretty much everyone else for exactly that reason. James saying they only became aware of the impression it may have on people to see them with Castro strikes me as incredibly naive, even for the Manics, who tend to romanticize certain political issues. Almost everyone - including people who aren't interested in or aware of politics at all - I talked to about this experiment at the time asked me things like: "So you support a band that worships a dictator?" And obviously there were no pictures or videos of them shaking Castro's hand yet.

I don't know, I just really can't imagine they didn't consider this might become an issue. Maybe the real reason why they think it was a bad idea is that it was almost a commercial suicide.
I love it because of its ridiculousness! It's just an absurd thing to do, and so few bands would ever think of going to Cuba for whatever reason. And aren't they the first western band to play there? Whether you're into politics or not, just the act alone is quite a brave thing. Especially at the time, when they were one of the biggest bands around.

I'm sure the Cubans who went to the gig are glad they did. I guess I can understand them being embarrassed about it now, but I still like that they did it. Only someone with a large degree of ignorance of the band would take a photo of them with Castro as them endorsing everything about him.

Likewise, the message of The Love of Richard Nixon is not really all that enigmatic if you follow the band in anything but the most casual manner. They explained it several times upon release and since, so if people are interested enough to be offended and/or bemused by a song that has any positivity about Richard Nixon then they should bother finding out what it was about or they frankly deserve their offence and/or bemusement. Actually, even in the absence of any interviews or explanations, the lyrics are kind of self-explanatory if you think about them at all.

The Manics have clearly always had a contrary nature. It's ironic JDB cites the two examples above, and yet is saying he likes that they 'exist outside of fashion' - the fact the band has ploughed its own furrow, trodden its own path (and any other farming metaphor you like) is part of what I think many of us like about them, even if we (and they themselves) don't always agree with every way they express that contrariness towards so much.

I think JDB is being way too hard on themselves. And how he can say nothing good came out of Lifeblood… I find it hard to even find the words about how wrong that is. Even if it's not everyone's favourite Manics album, the likes of 1985, To Repel Ghosts, Solitude Sometimes Is, Cardiff Afterlife are stunning, amazing tracks that hold up fantastically well in the context of anything they've done before or since, IMHO.

Even if the band aren't keen on Lifeblood, they must surely recognise there is a section of their most loyal fans who adore the album - if he doesn't think that is "something good" to have come out of the Lifeblood era, well… that's a real shame.

Anyone know when the next series of Jools Holland starts, I'd love to see the Manics on there playing stuff from Futurology. I'd like the entire show to be them playing every song
