i assume we're only caring about this because the Manics seem to? singles charts don't matter anymore for a rock band, they're on the wrong battlefield. i think the problem is that with the 'mass communication' they aimed for some kind of noble failure, but they've just made themselves look really quaint. it's one thing to hark back to the nineties musically. it's another thing altogether to hark back to the nineties with your promo campaign.

it seems obvious to me that the song with reach on Postcards is the title track, the whole campaign should have started with that, and then there didn't actually need to be anymore singles. they don't achieve anything for this band anymore. there are other ways to keep people aware of the existence of the album. they should embrace reality and innovate, instead of sticking their heads in the sand and being smug about being covered in bitter flecks of sand that not only ruin their clothes but stain their souls forever.

"If you do not raise your eyes, you will think you are the highest point" - Antonio Porchia. there's your next album quote Nicky.

Nothing wrong with a slimmer version of SKON as a single. It's a decent song. Would have released Balconies first, then SKON, and then Hazelton, but can only arrive at those three in hindsight. Maybe they would have made a more effective chart campaign.

Postcards from a young man re-enter at #88 in uk chart. About 5000 copies. But no idea about total sales. I think about 75000 copies.

SATT did I think when Autumsong was released, that pushed some album sales but that wasn't December, that was July or maybe August from the top of my head.
I don't see the album selling another 5000+ in a week again unless they get on loads of TV shows again so I don't think the album will make the charts anymore. Had a nice total of 7 weeks in the top 100....2 more than Plague Lovers.

SATT went back into Top 75 after AS was released. But I think the sales from SKON has been even higher, sales this week was almost 6000 and PFAYM has now sold around 80 000. It's not exactly mass communication, but it's not a flop either

Right on, mass audience = sales, especially around Christmas.

I thought the performance on that wasn't great, but it showed the song to a huge audience they likely won't have been heard by for a long while.

I'm not a fan of Postacards as an album either but more sales are good for getting the Manics out there to more people.

Has it gone up already then? These charts for downloads confuse me anyway. I shall tell James they missed out on an extra sale though!
