I'm with bornagirl in that I've always taken this line to simply mean anyone who claims any kind of purity is lying, at least to themselves if not to everyone else, because nobody is 100% pure, even if they haven't actually had sex. So for me, the word "virgin" shouldn't necessarily be taken too literally, but what do I know, eh?!

Richey was quoted saying it too 'when a baby is born he shrieks at the horror of it all... everything else is just a downward spiral'.

Wasn't that quote about Life becoming a landslide though?

It seemed to be more like a repeating theme, considering other things he said about being dragged down at adulthood.

mmm, I remember that, something like the only perfect circle is a newborn baby's eye, but then it sees the world and gets corrupted, or something vaguely like that.....

As to 'All virgins are liars', by friend once told me years ago, when she was a fan and I wasn't, that the whole song was about Richey being a virgin...Lol, not by that point he wasn't...

I wanted to continue this discussion. What does everyone (including newcomers!) think of that line?

It's the viewpoint of a prostitute, no one can claim to be totally pure or something? That's how it's always come across to me anyway.

Well, in context (the album's called The Holy Bible for Christ's sake), I'm sure there's a sly nod to Our Lady in there somewhere.

Yeah, pretty much seems like what everyone is saying. I think it's interesting that he wrote it in the form of dialogue, as he would do characters sometimes, and that it's also about celebrity actually...

I think that at times you don't know if to read it from the point of view of a character, or as a personal song. The self-harm part, for example, a lot of prostitutes suffer from BDD. But from what I've experienced, I think a lot of people thought that this part was about himself.

So is 'All virgins are liars...' literal, as the point of view of a prostitute, or could it be considered metaphorical?

Hell yeah. I've said it in one of the song interpretations thread. I'm glad someone agreed.
