I was trying to think of things to fill up the b-side disc. I doubt the hardcore fans (forget the general public) would bother with this if it was just GATS remastered and we already know there's a second disc, almost definitely all the b-sides, hopefully some live stuff from the era and unheard demos. I already have the album (twice, the limited gold one and the standard one) and all the singles off it, vinyl and CD, so really hoping the second disc has some unexpected gems on it.

Great that this seems to be happening. It’s the only Manics album I don't own a vinyl release of (the second hand prices have put me off thus far), so it would be nice to finally have a 12inch copy if they do that.
I have to admit it would be kind of grimly funny if they swapped Sleepflower for any of the b-sides in retaliation to the years of fan requests at gigs...

Hibernation 3:32
Patrick Bateman 6:31 Us Against You 3:19 Donkeys 3:10 Wrote for Luck 2:42 Comfort Comes 3:29 Are Mothers Saints 3:20 Charles Windsor 1:39 What's My Name (Live) 1:42 Total of roughly 29:30, given the odd half-second and gap between tracks. Meaning we could easily get them on a second disc alongside the album demos. Or they could be put on the first disc, with the second disc of demos and live tracks. I doubt we'll get a proper documentary, so could there be enough material to fill a DVD? It'd be nice if it could be a DVD-sized digibook at least, but if it's just two discs I see them going for a digipak. |

Even though Donkeys is a great song, it'd be such a stupid idea to stick in something which wasn't even from the actual album sessions. Production-wise it does not fit and I'd argue it would be a sore thumb on the album in any circumstance. Everything about it screams 'recorded for less money in a small studio afterwards', good as the end result obviously is. I can forgive them for doing this (once) with Underdogs but this pish seriously needs stopping, now. |

I still find Comfort Comes truly orgasmic.
GATS is a weird era (in a good way) so looking forward to seeing what they come up with. Would love new material in 2020 though Manics! Some War on Drugs type shit would go down well. |

Can I suggest
1) A CD of demos 2) Some nice videos 3) An acoustic show like they did at Rough Trade for Generation Terrorists - saw the songs in a totally new light after that!

Smells like an April/May UK tour playing GATS in full and then festival appearances with best of setlist along with Killers & Green Day support already been announced. A GATS reissue probably around March/Arpil...

I listened to GATS the other day and really enjoyed it from start to end, I don't get the complete hatred for this album. It's not their best work, but I actually prefer some of the album songs over the singles. It's a rocking album on the whole, sounds good and loads of cool vocals and guitar work from James. I reckon they could fill up a dvd with TV and live stuff, but considering they didn't bother with TIMTTMY album doesn't inspire me sadly

Might have been nineties critical mindset. Plus Nevermind had happened. But yeah, GATS works.

Gold Against The Soul has always been a difficult album for me to love because it’s almost exactly a 50/50 split between great songs and crap songs. If you include the b-sides from the GATS era, then I’d say these are the songs I like:
Are Mothers Saints Comfort Comes Donkeys From Despair To Where Hibernation La Tristesse Durera (Scream To A Sigh) Life Becoming A Landslide Patrick Bateman Roses In The Hospital Sleepflower Yourself The rest of the songs from that era suck. They just leave me cold, they do absolutely nothing for me. But if the reissue the boys are doing includes remasters of all the above tracks, I’ll put them together in a playlist and that can be my version of GATS.

I am strictly against such things, but I'm afaid GATS is very tempting. It was said in this thread before: Donkeys and Comfort Comes didn't exist at the time of the GATS sessions, so they shouldn't be included in any swaps. They should RE-MIX GT instead!!! Some demos and/or a complete live set would be fantastic. GATS is very underrated, because of weaker songs (DDD, NP, SoT, GATS), but with an exception of THB, every album has weak songs. And GATS has the best JDB vocals.
