I can see why Rosebud was left out in the cutting floor, it has too many similarities to the truth album and they were trying to get away from that sound. Even if it was one of probably their stronger songs. The intro is pure Frusciante inspired like from Soul to Squeeze. The keys in the chorus are magnificent and I can see why something like studio cut of why so sad works in the normal KYE, it has that wtf? factor with the solo with the theremin-esque solo.
First post in ages, how's everyone?

I've been trying my best to work out which song Rosebud most reminds me of... does anybody else get a Prologue to History vibe from it?

The start of Rosebud has a bit of a Manorbier vibe to it. The chorus and solo are addictive. It’s nice to have a song to enjoy.

I think there's an Ocean Spray and She is Suffering vibe too. I wondered if the woman is James's mum? I really like the lovely nostalgia video and format of the album.

It has hints of quite a few songs, but someone earlier mentioned Black Garden and I totally heard that on first listen.
Just watched the official video... yet another one done in recent years I won't ever watch again. So boring and dull. Maybe it's personal footage of theirs, but it's been done before. Didn't even bother to make it a 'lyrics video' this time. Get a new director in for the future, forget Kieran Evans now, I bet most college or university media students could come up with something great and they'd do it for free as part of their studies!

To be fair to Kieren, I doubt the budget for a video for a rejected b-side appearing on a re-release, is much northward of £500. It was probably a favour more than anything else not a great video but when he's given a decent budget the videos tend to more worthwhile.

After a few listens there is a repetitiveness to rosebud but it's still a belter and i too miss james sounding like that, he sounds amazing on this. There is something in the vocals that reminds me a little of some tracks off this is my truth but it's got the kye stamp and i'm amazed they didn't at least use it as a b-side. And yeah... great to hear some new/old stuff!

I've made Rosebud my obsession on Last FM! Great to have a completely new song to listen to!

I've used =Glyn; post for the glorious lists again. As you can't quote a quote.
But who's up for Tracklist discussion? To while away hours until in hands? I genuinely expected Pedestal to have made it to either album's tracklisting. Even thought Locus Valley was staring in the face for Solidarity opener, imo. Plus you don't have to quote this. Have a great weekend. Enjoy the pre-holiday. I regret nothing and it'll be September before we can say "YouTube should have been on DVD!". If I had to reduce KYE to a single album with between 10/12 tracks it would look something like this:
Found That Soul So Why So Sad Ocean Spray Door To The River Let Robeson Sing Rosebud Intravenous Agnostic Masking Tape The Convalescent Midnight Sun Miss Europa Disco Dancer (Hidden track - Locust Valley) This could change after I get to hear Studies in Paralysis but I'm very happy with the above. That's probably a top 3 Manics album right there, for me at least.

Door To The River and Masses Against The Classes need to be addressed don’t they.
Masses is clearly KYE era (but I get that it could just about sneak in as a TIMT song) but it needs to be at the start or at the end of the album. It’s utterly wasted in the middle. Door To The River is one of the most beautiful songs they’ve ever done. Always has been. But it’s the polar opposite of KYE. I dunno where it stands - maybe that’s why it’s so unique - but I don’t think it’s an album song and it’s definitely not a KYE song. That period from 2002-2005 was incredible too. PPF, Lifeblood, Door To The River, Firefight… there must be some more gems tucked away in the vaults from that period. |
