Cheers for the vid, Elizabeth - I love Further Away, so really appreciated that one! As a newbie, I've been busy getting caught up with all the videos you've previously uploaded to your YouTube channel and, going by the entertainment value of the out-takes, I can't wait to see the full film when it finally materialises!

Has the final cut been decided on? Is it much different from what has already been previewed? You should take all that footage to BBC Wales or S4C and get them to make it in to a Manics reality show. |

Eight years ago, upon hearing "300 hours of footage," I would have thought exactly the same thing. However, to address that number, it sounds like a lot more than it actually is. For one thing, that 300 hours includes ALL footage shot for the film, not just footage shot of the Manics themselves. For another, there is a LOT of downtime on film, lots of times when the camera doesn't have the interesting shot, lots of times when there simply isn't anything interesting going on. Adding the difficulty of getting clean audio in a verite setting where your subjects aren't intentionally projecting their voices or speaking directly into microphones renders even more of the footage unusable. Edited pieces make it seem as though every minute is captured in full scintillating glory, but in fact, the 5-minute edited piece that rivets your attention probably came from hours of raw footage. Reality show? By working hard, we just managed to put together one little 103-minute film that told a coherent story! DVD extras are fun for documentary filmmakers, because that's where they get to use all the fun scenes that didn't fit into the story flow of the film, but this, too, adds to the illusion that the lives of people who are being documented are constantly full of excitement and action when in reality, most of the time their lives really aren't that much different from anyone else's. This is another thing that I was quite startled to learn during the process of making this film. |

Great news! Hope no more unwelcome surprises will get in your way now.
And good luck on the NY screening

Elizabeth, what period does your footage cover? From the stuff you've put out so far it all looks 2005-2007, there anything else you've snuck in?

Our principal shooting took place during 2005-2007, but we have material from 2008-2009 as well. The film tells the story of the Manics from their inception up through the release of Journal For Plague Lovers.

That's interesting, I thought it purely chronicled the development of SATT... I hope the crucial "Let's make a good album!" idea moment is captured
