They could include interview clips with fans/band without music, though? That, at least, would make a nice addition to the Youtube channel.

Without knowing the details of that, they are professional filmmakers. If you've got good lawyers contracts can be messed with.

From what I can recall, I believe Elizabeth mentioned that it was a verbal agreement of some kind which is a lot easier to break than a written one. Believe me, I deal with contracts on a daily basis (with large media conglomerates), written contracts are almost impossible to break or alter.

Regardless, it was a shitty move on Sony's (or was it Warner-Chappell?) to weasel out of a deal with them. Way to promote your artists!

Maybe if the filmmakers contacted the new PR Company they might have some success?!
Just an idea

Not sure if this has been mentioned, and if so how long ago, but. At the screening at the start of 2012, they were talking about fan funding - I can't remember whether it was to release the film without the music, or to pay for the use of the music. They took donations at the end and it seemed like things were finally getting into gear. What happened to that money, and why haven't they started taking funds online, over a year and half later, I wonder? (Not saying this bitterly, I was happy to give them some money if only for the screening, but I'm curious, and it seems odd to say it was to fund the release in some capacity then say nothing more.)

The donations were to fund that particular screening, not to fund the release. The donations were generous and appreciated very much, but all they paid for was the hiring of the screening room and chairs. This was expressly specified at the screening when the donations were requested.

As for taking funds online, we have not done that yet because after consulting with crowdfunding professionals, we determined that we simply do not have the resources to mount a crowdfunding campaign that would raise a sufficient amount of money for the release, and obviously, we're not going to take money from anyone until we're certain that we can use it to deliver the final product. We intend to do a crowdfunding campaign when it becomes appropriate. In the mean time, we are continuing to raise money for the film via other channels.

This film will not under any circumstances be released without music.

I think it's sony, not the manics. But I think the Manics have long since moved on from that era.

I think the donations were for the screening. I believe they were still in a position where fan donations were not going to be enough. I also think they are still working on the film. I think the amounts of money involved are quite large where Sony is involved.

Yeah, I'd guess you are right. Sometimes I assume you have to grab the chances when they come along.

We are not working on content for the film. There have been some cosmetic changes made since the Feb 2012 screening, but the film itself is complete.

Sorry Elizabeth, I meant still working on getting it out, not on the film content .

Aha, sorry, my mistake. My memory is failing me

Glad to hear the fight is still being fought.

Thought I'd just see how things stand with this film. I've been travelling in New Zealand for over 4 months and was hoping by the time I get back home there would be news on this. Shame. To Elizabeth, will there be deleted scenes and other extras on the DVD release? Can we expect a new trailer for it any time? Thanks.

I haven't got into the legal minutiae, but surely such films coming out would bring about a financial benefit to a record company in terms of the film effectively promoting one of their artists.

Even on a low level the release of such a DVD would generate a small buzz and news stories among the NME/indie blog world that would at least put the Manics make in a few lapsed/semi-curious fans minds to bother to explore their latest work, or be inspired to explore the 20th Anniversary GT and the like.

It's not even just through the DVD itself, but it could be bought by various music channels (in numerous countries). Sky Arts for example is really hungry for content and you often see pretty low budget and "unofficial" documentaries bought by them and shown X times per month - usually in slightly shortened form to preserve the sales interest in the full DVD.
