Really nice surprise, as the album really indeed is great.
Strong album and so far haven't really felt any weak points at all, which is surely good sign.
Also, its again nice to hear demo:s on the 2nd disc.

I did not have too high hopes (eventhough I have loved every release so far from MSP) but this new album is awesome. I have to say it now, I love "Futurology"!!!
On my 3rd spin at the moment and more coming later...
I might have to still buy digital download of "Caldey" as I really liked that song..

8½ or even maybe 9 out of 10.

Dreaming A City is god-tier.
Maybe also one of these: Empty Motorcade, Between The Clock And The Bed, Misguided Missile

Haven't heard a lot of love for View From Stow Hill. I adore it. I even love the tweet and facebooking part. So what if it's grumpy old man stuff, social media really can be fucking horrific and "Cheepness surrounds me but I'm not looking" is just delivered SO WELL.

After first listen I have to say the Manics are most definitely the critics' darlings. As I expected the songs they've been playing live are by far the best on the album and the rest is either embarrassing Bowie imitations or just pure meh. The music is uninspiring on the rest of the album tracks and I can't remember one single lyric. I don't get the excitement about it whatsoever.

Well, the German critics seem to dislike (if not hate) it, so there you go. ;-)

I love the music. Not sure about the lyrics but the music absolutely makes the song for me, especially the 2nd half of the song.

I’ve given it three spins today at work and I’m pretty impressed. I like that there is a concept/unifying theme of the album which makes it feel more of a complete work rather than a disparate set of songs, which I think is something that KYE, SATT, PFAYM and RTF all suffer from to some extent (Don’t be Evil and 30 Year War sound faintly ridiculous on the albums that they conclude when compared with what has preceded them, even if individually they are decent songs). It is heavily indebted to Simple Minds, (before they turned godawful) but I don’t think to the point of parody as I was worried it might be.

Standouts would be Europa Geht Durch Mich, Divine Youth, Next Jet to Leave Moscow and Between the Clock and the Bed. The duets on this album seem to work a lot better than some previous attempts where guests seem to have been chosen without a great deal of thought. Whether or not Green Gartside’s voice is necessarily everyone’s cup of tea, I do think it works really well on the song he features on. It’s a long way from Ian McCulloch and James honking their way through Some Kind of Nothingness. Let’s Go to War (wasn’t a fan of the live version) and Sex, Power, Love and Money, both are which could have been pretty horrible, actually turn out to be quite good.

I do think the album tails off poorly with three of the album’s least inspired songs. As well as being one of the weaker pieces, musically and lyrically, The View from Stow Hill is probably the one song on there that doesn’t really fit comfortably on the album. Mayakovsky is, by some stretch, one of the weakest instrumentals they’ve done and Wire shouting over the top of it doesn’t add anything beyond making it slightly cringe worthy. Misguided Missile is by no means a terrible song, it just suffers by comparison with much better earlier on the album.

Overall I think it’s a very accomplished record, although probably more musically conservative than I thought it would be. Whilst I’m fond of Walk Me To the Bridge and Futurology, they are a bit too reliant on old Manics tricks of the big choruses/pomp rock that I hoped this album might veer away from. Still a decent record and probably about as far as they were ever really likely to push the envelope. 7/10

The demo? It's on the deluxe/limited edition/whatever version, and I also have it on Spotify, but someone in this thread told me yesterday that there are different Spotify versions in different countries, and I'm in Germany, so not sure if it's (already?) online anywhere else.

So - when will we get our hands on the japanese edition bonus tracks? Didn't see them up on iTunes yet and considering from how good the three deluxe edition extras are, Anti Social Manifesto and Kodawari should be worthe the wait.
