I always thought it's just about life in general. We're not dead yet kind of thing.

James has said in an interview that he would find writing a love song 'embarrasing' anyway!

the opening lines 'you fall in through the night, and give in to bad dreams'....perhaps its an ode to his favourite whisky poison? ......or cheese on toast before bedtimes!

'I can't give you an A to Z' means that life is unpredictable presumably

or a list of reasons or excuses to explain something without justifying them with a truly valid one.... The more i think about it i think its James writing/talking about the times when drink 'controlled' (controlled in the loosest possible context) his life around London and the relationship he was in would've obviously suffered as a result.
I could be totally way off beam but his lyrics are fairly heart on the sleeve wearing stuff and shine through in Bradders endearing way. |

James has always said he's enjoyed his drinking over the years so dunno if it's to do with that. Could be though!

It's about journeying whilst reflecting.

pretty much the whole album is themed on journeys and reflections, and his B-sides reflect that even more...and yes agree Gutless, James has always enjoyed his drink but i'm sure even more it refers back to the Lifeblood times because that was when the Manics seemed most distant and Nicky, Sean and James spent more time apart than ever before...and whilst Nicky and Sean had settled family lives to keep them occupied James was frequenting London pubs/bars to just wallow away the hours.
Think it shows that he always likes to be on the case and focussing on the Manics and making great music and how driven he normally is. |
