Resistance is Futile Lyrics Thread

I’ve had a go at transcribing the Resistance Is Futile lyrics (from... er... memory ).

Bear in mind that I’m trying for accuracy here but it’s entirely possibly I have made colossal blunders. I shall welcome any suggestions for corrections.

It should go without saying that if you haven’t heard the album yet, I would humbly suggest you wait until you listen to it before spoiling yourself. And if you’re reading this on or after April 13th 2018, what are you doing? Go and buy the album right now! It probably comes with the lyrics anyway!

So, last spoiler warning! spoilers...!

...wanna read on?

Ok...

People Give In

People get tired
People get old
People get forgotten
People get sold, People get sold

There is no theory of everything
No immaculate conception, no crime to forgive

Torn between the then and now
Never really knowing the why and how

People break down
People move on
People can't cope
People stay strong

People give in
People stay strong

People get happy
People get lost
People cave inwards
People lose trust, People lose trust

There is no theory of everything
No immaculate conception, no crime to forgive

Torn between the then and now
Never really knowing the why and how

People break down
People move on
People can't cope
People stay strong

People give in
People stay strong

Break down
Move on
Stay strong

Break down
Move on
Break down

Stay…

There is no theory of everything
No immaculate conception, no crime to forgive
Torn between the then and now
Never really knowing the why and how

People break down
People move on
People can't cope
People stay strong

People give in
People stay strong

International Blue

You wrote your autograph on the far side of the sky
You recorded the falling rain but you never told us why
You painted with fire only the ashes now remain
The monochrome desire you left us too young to explain

Will you lead us to an empty room
And frame it with the sky so blue
The little boy who saw the truth
He left us with international blue

International blue

Here's my gift to you a soundtrack to the void
The deepest of interludes the myths that you destroyed
And I saw that colour through a clear wide window
And I saw that colour and I knew I had to go

Will you lead us to an empty room
And frame it with the sky so blue
The little boy who saw the truth
He left us with international blue

International blue

Will you lead us to an empty room
And frame it with the sky so blue
The little boy who saw the truth
He left us with international blue

International blue
International blue
International blue

Distant Colours

Say what you want
Break my heart a thousand times
But it's still right here
So you left me with lies
Let the banners unfold
Let them fall to the floor
We once had each other
But now we're not so sure

Are we living in the past
Where there's nothing left to fear
Won't you say that you love me
Tell me what I wanna hear
A cold war for the mind
My distant colours still bleeding
A broken promise for the soul
Never loving, never healing

I no longer know
My left from my right
Between your hopes and fears
And my choice to decide
So say what you want
I break my heart a thousand times
But it's still right here
Will we ever survive

Are we living in the past
Where there's nothing left to fear
Won't you say that you love me
Tell me what I wanna hear
A cold war for the mind
My distant colours still bleeding
A broken promise for the soul
Never loving, never healing
Never ever healing

My distant colours still bleeding
Still bleeding

Are we living in the past
Where there's nothing left to fear
Won't you say that you love me
Tell me what I wanna hear
A cold war for the mind
My distant colours still bleeding
A broken promise for the soul
Never loving, never healing

Vivian

You walk these streets
With a camera round your neck
It’s your weapon of choice
It’s your ultimate defence

I’ve seen your face
But I’ve rarely seen your smile
Did you leave the ruins
Or did you build a life

Vivian did you ever realise
All that mystery that you left behind

Ah Vivian, Ah Vivian
Ah Vivian, Ah Vivian

I’ve looked inside your soul
But we never heard your voice
Did we ever see
Beneath your disguise

The museums and galleries have become your home
Would it mean that much if you were looking down

Vivian did you ever recognise
All that history, you never compromised

Ah Vivian, Ah Vivian
Ah Vivian, (Did you ever recognise)
Ah Vivian, (You never compromised)

Vivian did you ever recognise
All that history, you never compromised

Ah Vivian, Ah Vivian
Ah Vivian, Ah Vivian

Ah Vivian (Did you ever realise)
Ah Vivian (The mystery you left behind)
Ah Vivian (Did you ever recognise)
Ah Vivian (You never compromised)

Dylan & Caitlin

The blank page awaits
Love has deserted and made
A fool and a drunk out of me
My wishes no longer made real

Alone with this feeling again
Love has deserted the pain
The alcohol starts to sink in
The drinking blinds us to sin

I never meant to believe in you
It's so hard just surviving the truth
Words don't cover the scars anymore
The tears last longer than before

Together the tenderness cries
Together the tenderness cries

In dreams I will be by your side
In books, photographs and in voice
In verse, in metre and rhyme
I'm sorry and I wish that I tried

Dylan don't leave me behind
Love has divided and died
The beauty still shines in your eyes
America corrupted and lied

I never meant to believe in you
It's so hard just surviving the truth
Words don't cover the scars anymore
The tears last longer than before

Together the tenderness cries
Together the tenderness cries

I never meant to believe in you
It's so hard just surviving the truth
The words don't cover the scars anymore
The tears last longer than before

Together the tenderness cries
Together the tenderness cries
Together the tenderness cries
Together the tenderness cries

Liverpool Revisited

As I wake to a sunset
The light dances on the Mersey
And I think of the 96
As the tears fall down on me

There is courage, there is pride
You can see it in your eyes
Fight for justice, fight for life
There are angels in these
SKI-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-I-IES

As the night falls around me
I see joy and devotion
These times will never leave
Like the rain on the ocean

There is dignity and pride
There is poetry and life
There are ghosts within these stones
There’s defiance in these
BO-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-O-ONES

And all the hatred
They tried to throw at you
But you stayed so strong
Yeah all the hatred
It never was the truth
So keep keeping on

This is forever, we’ll never leave you now
This is forever, we’ll never leave you now

Sequels for Forgotten Wars

There will be no parades for the likes of us
The wars we fight are doomed to be lost
I’ve seen the reflections of my broken blood
The callous deception of never giving up

No stranger to the cause
No stranger to these wars

We dream no more
No shock and awe
Nowhere to go
For rock and roll
A blue screen for
A tribal horde
The sequels of forgotten wars

A twist and a turn towards apocalypse
A pose for effect before your deadly kiss
Echo echo in a chamber of purity
To a lip-synced moral maze soliloquy

No stranger to the scars
Still a stranger in these parts

Progressive thoughts for idle hands
Platforms for corruptive brands
A blue screen for
A tribal horde
The sequels of forgotten wars

No medication left to take
Just defeat and the bitterest of taste
A blue screen for
A tribal horde
The sequels of forgotten wars

——————————————

Hold Me Like A Heaven

I walk between the dividing lines
I dance around the exit signs
I hate the world more than I hate myself
I can’t pretend that it’s a cry for help

Tattered manifestos litter the mind
Diplomatic plans ravaged by time
It never really was the truth or lies
We just gave up and said our goodbyes

So hold me, hold me, hold me like a heaven
I want some faith and wanna be forgiven
I wanna feel your divine intervention
So hold me, hold me
So hold me, hold me like I’m lost in your heaven

What is the future of the future?
When memory fades and gets boarded up
All the ties that bind have come undone
Seconds of hate, tiny screams of love

So hold me, hold me, hold me like a heaven
I want some faith and wanna be forgiven
I wanna feel your divine intervention
So hold me, hold me
So hold me, hold me like I’m lost in your heaven

So hold me, hold me, hold me like a heaven
I want some faith and wanna be forgiven
I wanna feel your divine intervention
So hold me, hold me
So hold me, hold me like I’m lost in your heaven

In Eternity

I fell in love, in love with you a million times
Your clothes, your hair and the sweetest of smiles
We’ll never see, see the like of you again
A master of pleasure and a master of pain

Dark is a way
Light is a place

Close the curtains in L.A.
Open them up on a Berlin day
Self-made and self-realised
Always ready to disguise

In eternity - in death as in life
In eternity - the king and queen of style

There is no journey, no start and no ending
We all still arrive and keep on departing
You placed a light on a different universe
Made life better with the wonder of your words

Dark is a way
Light is a place

Close the curtains in L.A.
Open them up on a Berlin day
Self-made and self-realised
Always ready to disguise

In eternity - in death as in life

Broken Algorithms

These are the real sour times
Full of mistrust hatred and some lies
The heap of broken images
The jigsaw breaks again and it can’t be fixed

The fractured versions of our days
The plague our wisdom somehow made
History gets to write its own lies
The public votes and the public will decide

As you caress the beauty of your screens
Remember the mission to own your dreams
To avoid tax and order your life
To sell you a future you may not desire

B.R.O.K.E.N algorithms
B.R.O.K.E.N algorithms

Here’s the challenge: rise up against yourself
We now know society’s truly dead
So why return to these words again
When they burn so bright but die in flames

I walk through traces of my past
I seek immunity within my soul
They carry memory long and lost
The pieces fill the space and all the holes

As you caress the beauty of your screens
Remember the mission to own your dreams
To avoid tax and order your life
To sell you a future you may not desire

B-R-O-K-E-N algorithms
B-R-O-K-E-N algorithms

A Song For The Sadness

Memories are all we leave?
Fragments of lost melancholy
Traces of a generation gone
Tiny pieces of broken glass

Sh-sh-sh-shining like golden glitter
Looking up at the dying stars
Unloved by all who pass this way
I never really got a chance to say

Like islands in the stream
That get washed away
One more time in
The ghetto you say
I convinced myself
That I have walked the line
I’ve never deserted
By luck or by design

A song for the sadness
To clear away the madness
A song for the sadness
A song for the sadness

You made me with a true kindness
That I still feel runs through my flesh
Out of us time made such a mess
I cannot ignore and I must confess

Like islands in the stream
That get washed away
One more time in
The ghetto you say
I convinced myself
That I have walked a line
I’ve never deserted
By luck or by design

A song for the sadness
To clean away the badness
A song for the sadness
A song for the sadness

A song for the sadness
To clean away the madness
A song for the sadness
A song for the sadness

The Left Behind

From an open book
To a closed shop
Feeling like an animal
The one that time forgot

The squadron never dies
Falls quickly to demise
Some self-sacrifice
Some limits to your vice

Oh!

I never wanted you to change
I prefer to stay the same
I never wanted it to change, oh yeah

Waiting for the end of time
Waiting to be left behind
Acting like a passer-by
Waiting for the end of time

I was lonesome warrior
I was a willing conquistador
I believed in a higher truth
Bbelieved it more than you

The squadron never dies
Falls quickly to demise
Some self-sacrifice
Some limits to your voice

My fingernails are getting broken
My grip is somehow getting loose

I never wanted it to change, oh yeah

Waiting for the end of time
Waiting to be left behind
Acting like a passer-by
Waiting for the end of time

We’ll be
Waiting for the end of time
Waiting to be left behind
Acting like a passer-by
Waiting for the end of time

Time

Porco’s notes:
So, there’s still a few I’m not 100% on, and some I’m not sure will be possible to discern (“Dark is a way” or “Dark is away”?! Is this an obvious Bowie reference I’m being dense about?). (Solved? See Edit3 & raven’s post below!)

There’s one I’m very proud of if I accurately caught but I suspect it’s something more much more obvious and I’m mishearing... (“These are the Varius of our times”?!? Obscure much!?) I thought it was “these are very surreal times” at first, but there seem to be some other sound in there.

The one I am most stuck on is the line in Broken Algorithms (and to be honest I’m unsure of half that song!): [edit5; solved thanks to Dancing Kirby]

Obviously (if you’ve heard it) I’ve left out lots of ‘woahohohohohs’ from various points. And also the delightful ‘oh, oh, oh, oh’s from HMLAH. Heh, that was the first time I’ve typed HMLAH.... oh, that was the second... Ni!

Nearly drove myself mad with the line “no shock and awe” in STFW. Heheh, STFW, ftw! I heard ‘no Jacques Ennore’ and was trying to find out who this Jacques Ennore fella was... some nickname for Derrida? Maybe it is! The fun of guessing lyrics

Again, any suggestions welcome. If I agree I’ll edit this post, if I don’t I won’t, at least until the album is out, and then we can commence with the disagreements over whether the official printed lyrics are accurate .

Also feel free to discuss the lyrics, such as they are! I am frankly bowled over at the quality, there is a lot of thematic connective tissue going on here as far I’m concerned... I love it.

List of Edits;
Edit1: changed last bit of Sequels... as per Mr. Richey’s suggestion... still not sure if it’s “drama whore” or ‘tribal heart’ the whole way through (or a mixture, or neither!).
Edit2: I think it might be “These are very severe times” not ‘These are a Varius of our times’ in BA.
Also I think it might be “By luck or by design” not ‘lack’ in ASFTS.
Edit3: “Dark is a way”, not ‘away’, as per raven’s suggestion.
Edit4: "To clean away the badness" rather than "madness" in the penultimate chorus of ASFTS only, I think....? Meaning each chorus is technically different, if only by a letter.
Also, yet another guess at that opening line of Broken Algorithms: I know think it’s “These are variants of our times”. Enough possibilities yet?! lol.
Also, missed a 'break down' in PGI. Added. Had also accidentally repeated last two lines. Subtracted!
Edit5: Big edit for corrections thanks to Dancing Kirby. Left a few differences I swear are not the way he sings it. Feel free to argue about it/call me out on it!
Edit6: More tidying up. Still some minor differences from the printed lyrics.

I’m pretty sure the last part of “Sequels Of Forgotten Wars” is actually...

No medication left to take
Just defeat and the bitterest of tastes
A blue screen for a drama whore
The sequels of forgotten wars

...but I could be wrong.

“Nice!”

Let's go with that for now then

'Dark is a way and light is a place' is a line from a Dylan Thomas poem called Poem on His Birthday

“Nice!”

That makes total sense, brilliant.

Loving the overlapping references that appear to be going on in this album.

True. They've said the themes are memory and loss, confused and missing history, fractured present....and that all reveals itself slowly as you read through the lyrics and go back over them and take in the references....which is what I love doing so thank you for the early present Not far from the theme underlying Dylan Thomas' Birthday Poems - birthdays bringing happy memories from childhood, thoughts of life now and recognition of time passing, of death though not necessarily as bleak as clumsily summing it up like that makes it sound... 'Dark is a way and light is a place, Heaven that never was Nor will be ever is always true'. Light is a place even though Heaven remains uncertain we keep searching for the myth/light/hope....sorry rambling off. I now want to go find me a collection of Dylan Thomas's poems so another job done for the Manics there

Holding Patterns

The universe it waits
All the miseries that we make
The global emptiness
Identikit heroes, giant alter-egos
Internal monologues, the branded demagogues
To all the first responders
And all the early adopters

Bad blood cold rain*
The most modern of our pain
Perpetual, eventual
Perpetual slavery, eventual shame
Holding patterns are all that matter
Holding patterns draw the curtains
Hold back morning, no returning

All the mess we made
Failure to communicate
The missing millions
All are sinning from the beginning
No point in hanging on
Legacies are too far gone
Scared souls are never free
Black moons and high black galaxies

Bad blood cold rain
The most modern of our pain
Perpetual, eventual
Perpetual slavery, eventual shame
Holding patterns are all that matter
Holding patterns draw the curtains
Hold back morning, no returning

Bad blood cold rain
The most modern of our pain
Perpetual, eventual
Perpetual slavery, eventual shame
Holding patterns are all that matter
Holding patterns draw the curtains
Hold back morning, no returning

-----------------------------

*I *thought* it was "chlorine", but that could be wrong!? Anyone else got a different suggestion?(solved? see edit1)
And "high black galaxies"? Thought it was 'hyper-galaxies' at first. hmm.

Edit1: I think it’s ‘cold rain’ not ‘chlorine’.

—————————————————————————————
Official lyrics from the Japanese versions’s inlay (SO wrong IMHO. SO VERY wrong. But take your pick! ):

Holding Patterns

Lone universe he wakes
All the miseries that we make
The global emptiness
Identical heroes, giant TaToRiTos
Internal monologues, the branded demigods
Two of the first responders
And all the early doctors

That much, count on me
That must mind her, not by pain
I bet you were, I bet you weren’t
I bet you were shivering, I bet you were ashamed

Holding patterns
Draw them back now

Holding patterns
Draw back curtains
Hold back morning
No returning

All the mess we made
Failure to communicate
I miss you millions
All I’ve seen in from the beginning
No point in hanging on
Legacies are too far down
Skid souls and liver cream
Black moons and half black galaxies

That much, count on me
That must mind her, not by pain
I bet you were, I bet you weren’t
I bet you were shivering, I bet you were ashamed

Holding patterns
Draw them back now

Holding patterns
Draw back curtains
Hold back morning
No returning

That much, count on me
That must mind her, not by pain
I bet you were, I bet you weren’t
I bet you were shivering, I bet you were ashamed

Holding patterns
Draw them back now

Holding patterns
Draw back curtains
Hold back morning
No returning

Concrete Fields

My old school has closed its doors
The once-green fields are now concrete floors
And the roads are choking full of misery and fear
But my vision’s getting clearer and my mind it feels so free

And the work is hard and the wages are low
But the smiles still appear and the rivers still flow
And all I can do is sit here and moan
But my heart still bleeds for this place that I call home

My boyhood made of dreams and love
The happiest of times sitting with my mum and dad
But the bridges, the houses now dominate
The vaping and the super-schools, the breeding grounds of hate

But those once-green fields still live in my mind
They seemed so perfect, so simple and so kind
Just me and my brother, we’re kicking a ball
The world so close and so beautiful

And I got no answers, I place no blame
I just feel longing and I wanna hear your name
As I walk and I run through these once-green fields
It’s easy to see what has disappeared

And the air is getting heavy with memory and loss
The joy and the freedom, but freedom at what cost?
And the air is getting heavy with memory and loss
The joy and the freedom, the freedom at what cost?

Is this your inheritance, is this all that’s left?
The mountains we climbed are now mountains of debt
And the air is getting heavy with memory and loss
The joy and the freedom, the freedom at what cost?

We had joy, and we had fun
We had seasons in the sun

Yeah we had joy, we had fun
We had some seasons in the sun

Yeah we had joy, and we had fun
We had some seasons in the sun

Yeah we had joy, and we had fun
We had some seasons in the sun

A Soundtrack To Complete Withdrawal

Hidden failures no one to save us
Fractured moments, the gaps are growing
The dying decades, the first refusal

Total withdrawal, silence for all
The lost generation, bipolarisation
Solitary youth, this laziness finds its truth

I will be your weakness
I will help you make sense
I will be your battleground
Can I tie your blindfold?

Survive while you hold my fingers tight
Sing your soundtrack to withdrawal tonight
Survive while you hold my fingers tight
Sing your soundtrack to withdrawal tonight

So keep walking slow, like a pilgrim
Even when your heart is breaking
The gentle caress to the fear you know
Total withdrawal, silence for all
The lost generation, bipolarisation
Solitary youth, this laziness finds its truth

I will be your weakness
I will help you make sense
I will be your battleground
Can I tie your blindfold?

Survive while you hold my fingers tight
Sing your soundtrack to withdrawal tonight
Survive while you hold my fingers tight
Sing your soundtrack to withdrawal tonight

Survive while you hold my fingers tight
Sing your soundtrack to withdrawal tonight
Survive while you hold my fingers tight
Sing your soundtrack to withdrawal tonight

Porco! Thank you for doing these lyrics!
You've made getting into the album a lot easier over the last few weeks!

You're welcome Still tidying up... still not sure on a few (even with the lyrics printed for the album tracks! lol)

Still would welcome anyone else's idea of anything that looks wrong to them, especially on the bonus tracks.

I think I read on another thread that the normal CD didn't contain any quotes? Well from the deluxe one there's this at the start of the booklet from Virginia Woolf

'I can only note that the past is beautiful because one never realises an emotion at the time. It expands later, and thus we don't have complete emotions about the present, only the past.'

At the end of the booklet after all the lyrics and pictures is -

'Life is all memory, except for the one present moment that goes by you so quickly you hardly catch it going' - Tennessee Williams

Ok, My transcription of Mirror Gaze, and official lyrics from Japanese inlay for comparison, because I don't think they are the same(!!) Would welcome anyone else's input who has access to the track, but I think I’m pretty confident with the following:

————————————————————
My transcription, as far as I can tell:

Mirror Gaze

I’ve made some sense of emptiness
I've learnt to love me less and less
I finally let go of my weaker self
I made the crash and I made the wreck
I've got no time to stand and correct
‘Cause everybody hurts
Like the wise man said

I built the rod
For my own back
I got the monkey
Sitting on my neck

Beyond all this
Oblivion runs
Beyond all this
There lies a place for us
Beyond all this
There lies another way

Beyond all this
Oblivion runs
Beyond all this
There lies a place for us
Beyond my eyes
There is a mirror gaze

Only in a poem do you find some truth
The fiction is merely a hiding place
The mirror’s my enemy
The shadows are my friend

I’ve made some sense of emptiness
I've learnt to love me less and less
I finally let go of my weaker self

I built the rod
For my own back
I got the monkey
Sitting on my neck

Beyond all this
Oblivion runs
Beyond all this
There lies a place for us
Beyond all this
There lies another way

Beyond all this
Oblivion runs
Beyond all this
There lies a place for us
Beyond my eyes
There is a mirror gaze

There lies another way
There lies another way

Beyond all this
Oblivion runs
Beyond all this
There lies a place for us
Beyond all this
There lies another way

Beyond all this
Oblivion runs
Beyond all this
There lies a place for us
Beyond all this
There lies another way

———————————————————————————————————
and now the official printed lyrics… such as they are… !
———————————————————————————————————
Mirror Gaze

I made some sense of emptiness
I've learnt to love me less and less
I've finally let go of my weaker self
I made the crash and I made the wreck
I've got no time to stand and correct
Cause everybody hurts
Like the wise man said

I felt that I brought it
Down on my head
I got the monkey
sitting on my bed

The end of this
I believe you’re wrong
The end of this
There lies a place for us
The end of this
There lies another way

The end of this
I believe you’re wrong
The end of this
There lies a place for us
Beyond my eyes
There meets a mirror gaze

Only in a poem do you find some truth
The fiction was really a hiding place
Then it was my enemy
The shadows are my friends

I make some sense of emptiness
I’ve learnt to love me less and less
I finally let go of my weaker self

I felt that I brought (it)
Down on my head
I got the monkey
sitting on my bed

The end of this
I believe you’re wrong
The end of this
There lies a place for us
Beyond my eyes
There lies another way

The end of this
I believe you’re wrong
The end of this
There lies a place for us
Beyond my eyes
There meets a mirror gaze

(There) lies another way
(there) lies another way

The end of this
I believe you’re wrong
The end of this
There lies a place for us
Beyond my eyes
There lies another way

In Sequels of Forgotten Wars, the following line makes me curious:

A blue screen for a tribal heart

Is that "blue screen" really the Windows OS' infamous blue screen of death? Or am I just a nerd?

It does make sense, though....

It’s apparently tribal horde, though I thought it was ‘heart’ at first.

As for the ‘blue screen’, I think that’s a cool interpretation, and certainly works... I had thought of it as a blue screen like the ones they use in TV, e.g. something replaced with computer graphic imaging - the idea of tribal ‘armies’ who aren’t really there except digitally.

But I think both interpetations work, and the album is full of lyrics with multiple meanings.
