If RIF is RTF part 2, will we get Futurology part 2 next year?
A Soundtrack To Complete Withdrawal sounds so different to the rest of the album (and I love it!). What are the odds of another album next year, Rewind The Film / Futurology style?

It's kind of predictable at this point isn't it?
After KYE, we get Lifeblood. After SATT, we get Journals. After PFAYM, we get RTF and Futurology I knew once I heard International Blue, I would love the album that came after...

I still think they could make a successful instrumental album. Won't happen before another song album.
They seem to have stuck with two producers but kept the engineer from JFPL (and USA THB? That one?) I think that's the edge over PFAYM unless it's the same staff. Think we've got another three or four original albums as that brand name. It's up to them what they sound like really. Will probably be same production. The weirdest album they could do is self produce and self arrange. It's all down to how their year goes really. It didn't get to number one, so album same position as the last. Can't see them taking two or so years doing anniversary shows. Got their own studios. Absolutely fuck knows! Hopefully won't be four years before the next one. However if they announced another acoustic album would that be your "Ah fuck off! No fuck off!" tipping point? Well for those who haven't already reached that point. Personally I know that point exists but am not arsed about reaching that stage yet. |

^ nah, their less electric-guitary stuff isn't my least favourite tbh. While my top albums (in no particular order) are EMG, THB, Journal and Futurology, I also love Lifeblood, like RTF, and I don't have a problem with Postcards like some people do!

+ they should do a soundtrack (i enjoyed jdf - the chamber) just to get that out of their system. and then do at least twelve more soundtracks.

I remember starting a thread suggesting this and half this forum blew their shit. While the band are capable of it, they'd never commit to the concept for fear of the casual fans not turning up to the shows.

I think Resistance Is Futile is a continuation of a theme that began with Postcards From a Young Man and has carried on since.
Looking at it now, I see Postcards as an album of trying to recapture youth. There are many moments on Rewind The Film, Futurology and Resistance Is Futile that focus on growing old, and longing for things as they once were (or perceived to be). |

I think it's as they've said in the press, they've been away for a while and have made something without an overall lyrical or musical theme, but something deliberately melodic and immediate. Musically it borrows from their entire career, it's a well-polished, glossy mix of everything except The Holy Bible / Journal For Plague Lovers.
Rewind The Film was very sedate and sparse so I don't see much of that in Resistance Is Futile personally, I see more Tigers/Postcards, and it's almost "Lifeblood without disowning the guitar" for me. Next time (before or after side projects and soundtracks) I'd imagine there would be more of a theme. |

Yes, they made no secret of their struggle in getting started with the new one, compounded by the situation with moving studios. Whereas it seems from that NME video interview that to an extent they already have some ideas for the next one.

RIF sounds rather like Futurology Vol. 2 to me, minus instrumentals and less duets. There should be more Wire/James duets like Futurology's self-titled track.

I don't see many similarities to be honest. RIF seems to come from the SATT/PFAYM version of the band to me.
I'm struggling to place where they'll go next, but then again i always do. I wouldn't be surprised if we get one or two more similar sounding records next up. |

I don't think there's that much of a pattern as far as albums are concerned, there are a few sequences that you'd be forgiven for not knowing they're the same band. This Is My Truth, Know Your Enemy, Lifeblood... Journal For Plague Lovers, Postcards From A Young Man, Rewind The Film..
I'd probably say Rewind The Film is This Is My Truth part 2 before Resistance Is Futile being Rewind The Film part 2. Yeah, new one's a fairly introspective one too, but musically think it's got the most in common with its predecessor than any of the other albums. Where they go from here, I'll look forward to finding out.

I do think with the new studio and the impend big 5-0 for them, we'll see a new album pretty soon, either late 2019 or early 2020.

Soundtrack sounds more like a Futurology song to me, but then RTF/F could be a double album
