70 songs of self indulgence?
I've been thinking about the next Manics release in light of recent comments by both James and Nicky and it has got me thinking a lot about the possible directions the band will take next. Personally, I would love for this album to see the light of day but it's very easy for myself to get suckered into a mess of excitement when Nicky mentions the forthcoming Manics release and I am always a little bit dissapointed when the said release sounds nothing like it has been hyped as. I have a strong feeling that the next LP could be as follows:
1: A complete overhaul of the Manics sound. More diverse, more strange, eclectic. KYE MK2. 2: I can't see Nicky Wire writing a complete set of 70 lyrics for the songs. I imagine we'll get a lot of instrumental songs. It is fair to say that Nicky Wire hasn't really been the best lyricist in recent years but there are moments of pure beauty on SATT and PFAYM. 3: Personally, I would love the album to be recorded and released like the recent demos from JFPL and PFAYM. Include all the mistakes, the outtakes, etc. Basically, don't bring in the sheen and polish the songs. 4: The manics should release it in stages. (10 songs a month of 7 months). It'll keep the fanbase itching to hear more . The band could then release a mega boxset of the complete album with extras but charge £20 for it. 5: With James commenting that it'll sound like nothing the band has done before excites me because I tend to believe James more over Nicky. 6: Perhaps all three will contribute lyrically. 7: Nicky will take lead vocals on a lot of those tracks I believe. No bad thing, his voice is quite nice recently. |

I hope Nicky doesn't take lead vocal over more than one song if we MUST have him 'singing'!

I like Nicky singing, it's not bad and it's some relief after hearing James all the time. I agree with StarBright about KYE mk2 though, although I think it will be a bit heavier.
I love the idea of "10 songs a month over 7 months" but I do wonder whether the Manics would so something like that. Sadly, I find it hard to believe they're going to write 70 songs at all! And if they do, we should be prepared for some shocking lyrics as there's no way Nicky can write that many good lyrics. Maybe Sean will write some! |

There is no way on earth they release a seventy song album/project. Of all the completely ridiculous/unbelievable things any of them have ever said, this is probably the least believable/likely since the GT-era.

I can't help but think that the next album will be the stripped back 'Nebraska' style album they mentioned a few years ago. This followed by a short acoustic tour. I'm probably wrong though

It could happen but I find it hard that the Manics could write and record 70 songs for a single release. I believe the quality of the songs would average from brillaint to just for the hell of it random rubbish.

If they realised quick enough that a song was going down the pan, they should just make it very different. Throw in some bongos or didgeridoos or something.
What Manics songs have bongos in them? I can't think of any atm... |

It's not so much their talk about 70 songs that bothers me, it's their claims of "There's only so much melody stored in your body"?
Fast forward a couple of years: Oh this album got us back in touch with our melodic side. *Facepalm I don't mind them taking a break, the PFAYM single b-sides don't offer much clues (well from the samples I've heard) and I'm not ruling out the album being brilliant in it's own way. I don't know. I don't think the band do either. But if they'll have no excuse or arguements to make an album to win back casual fans if it blows up in their faces. Don't worry be happy don't worry be happy! |

It sounds like an album to please their current fans, and not gain new ones. Which, at this stage of their career they should be doing anyway.

Personally, they should take a 3 year break. James should do a solo album as should Nicky. They should release a comprehensive and chronological GH album and include 2 new songs. Come back in 2014 with the final album and tour it for 10 years.

I hope they follow through with it. We'll all be dead by the time they finish it. They can't hurt us anymore.

Nicky's lyrics on PFAYM were mostly half decent, and some of the B sides such as Broken Up Again have decent lines. He should take a rest instead of rushing them.

2. A sprinkling of instrumentals wouldn't be a bad thing. 3. Sheen isn't a problem so long as it doesn't dilute the emotion of the song; something very lacking in recent years, except for a few tracks. 4. Not keen on stages; but then I'll be very surprised if there's more than 18 tracks on the next album. 5. Hopefully! 6. I'd certainly like to see james contribute more lyrics. 7. NO! |
