Found That Soul

I have started listening to this again after quite a long absense and I firmly believe it to have been the last truly great single the band have released. I just love how raw it sounds (ironic as it partially rips off "Raw Power" by The Stooges, I love the energy and anger to the vocals and that solo is pure fret wankery but I love how it simply does not give a fuck.

Anyone else feel this way?

Yep, it's a rocking track! Great one to have blasting from the car!

KYE on the whole is a seriously overlooked album. Well worth listening to in full again.

It's by far my favourite Manics album to listen to from start to finish. It's such a strong album. I really wish they'd venture out and do something like it again.

I find KYE too patchy to listen to from start to finish, tend to skip a fair bit. But the highlights are unquestionably great, and one of those is Found That Soul. One of my favorite opening Manics tracks.

Not the last 'great' single (believe that was There By the Grace of God), but in terms of attitude and rawness, certainly the last of it's kind. Found that Soul is one of my favourite MSP songs, let alone single.

Although i also deem TLORN and Empty Souls great songs, they didn't really suit the single. I'll ignore SATT as far as singles go, Some Kind of Nothingness wasn't too bad either to be fair.

Imagine if they had released Forever Delayed as a single... such a missed opportunity.

KYE was a very underrated era, still the most exciting of the band in regards to the WTFness of it all (releasing SWSS then FTS, the 'disco' song, the gigs they did, Nicky singing, James playing bass, trashing their equipment etc...).

I find Found that Soul very....meh. I kinda sounds like they are deliberatly trying to be loud and rocky. It doesn't feel very natural to me, rather forced. But some of the tracks on KYE are fantastic and a bit unusual to my ear. I still think Elian is Nicky's most cohesive set of lyrics. There isn't a dud word until the very end with the rocking chair

I think the rocking chair line is brilliant
"You don't just sit in a rocking chair
When you've built a revolution"
Defines apathy in two lines. Some of my favourite ever Nicky lyrics .
KYE is one of my favourite albums too, I like the disorder in it .

Their performance of this on cd:uk in 2001 has almost become my standard version of it - you can hear Nicky a bit throughout esp at 2.09. The vocals at 2.56 also adds an extra dynamic too :-) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BeuxkcYapE8

As things currently stand, I would have to agree. I genuinely believe that one of the SATT b-sides could've held the title, as the majority of them make up a better album than SATT itself (see this thread). And I think it was criminal that nothing from JFPL was released as a single as, again, there are some very strong contenders there. We'll have to wait to see what Futurology brings us but I'm firmly on your side for now, mate.

And yes, the solo is unapologetically glorious fret wanking. And I love it.

It's the only thing that spoils it. I can even live with the production as it kind of suits the track. The production on the rest of KYE though...well, I think I've done that rant several times already on FD so let's not go down that road again
