I think generally longboxes just house the regular cd release.

There are two small pictures (front/back) at http://www.theloveof.tk/

yep, for some reason in up until the mid-90s-ish, that's how CDs were shipped and sold in the States. cf. A Year And A Half In The Life Of Metallica, when we first saw it and saw how the album was shipped in similar longboxes we thought we were missing out!

my Dad used to go to the States a lot in the early 90s and brought back "normal" CD boxes. when i asked him how did he get them like that and not in those long boxes, he explained that they all did come in them, but he just tossed them!

perhaps they did it as some sort of anti-shoplifting plan?

shops in the US did, especially major retail shops. obviously, the indie shops still carried vinyl.

Yeah, all a matter of storing the damn things. Had all the LP storage things, and this provided an easier transition to move over to cds.

Most recent longbox I saw was abiggerbang by the Stones at a Sam's Club.

Seen a lot of talk about the Generation Terrorists longbox recently which I wasn't aware of up until now. How much else do we know about the longbox, e.g....

- where was it sold? USA - particular shops?
- how many exist in the world today? Anyone got one?
