SATT did very well early on, but has gone down in people's estimations since...think the same will happen to futurology and then rewind the film will be seen more like lifebood.
Last time I went to a Manics gig the bones were creaking in the crowd, so I'm not sure moshing like crazy is even possible at their gigs these days. Holy Bible might be different mind

That's pretty much my relationship with the albums mentioned too. Haven't had Futurology on for a while but it's still in a kind of honeymoon period, I do like it but I am leaning more towards Rewind The Film.

It did take me a while to "get" Lifeblood, do find their back catalogue quite diverse, yeah they've gone over similar ground before a couple of times but eh it's been 25 years. Lifeblood is definitely the odd one out and it's a shame they don't give it more time, they used to revel being the odd ones out. It's an underdog!

Listening to Lifeblood is like opening a door to a parallel universe consisting entirely of WIN. The first 6 tracks are all killer, no filler. I LOVE IT.

Completely agree. Definitely an album made in two minds. Do we continue down the KYE path or try and get back to commercial success? In the end they did neither.

'Lifeblood' really *didn't* get 'largely positive reviews'. It was reviewed poorly as another example after 'Truth' and 'KYE' of how the band had lost their way, and is largely still considered to be so in the media now. The singles charted well but I think they were released at a time when single sales were lower and so you didn't need to sell many to hit the top ten.

I like 'Lifeblood', it has some decent songs on it. But it wasn't the album the band wanted to make - based on later comments I think they wanted to make something more like the more pop moments of 'Futurology' but instead made something very cold and sterile.

I seem to remember quite a few largely positive reviews...I mean some people are never going to give Lifeblood a good review because of the style of music (e.g. kerrang), but it wasn't just slated as that implies.

That's not how I remember it. I remember it getting lots of positive reviews and a few poor ones, but the balance definitely being towards the positive.

Yes it got decent reviews, not so much, like Takk says, in Kerrang or the rock mags but all the Women's mags I brought around that time loved it, remember 'Good Housekeeping' giving it 4 out of 5 stars

Same...I don't think in general it was considered as 'lost their way' at the time, that was the way it was written off later on.

I do, however, seem to remember Q Magazine giving it a pretty poor review, 2 out 5 or 3 out of 10, whatever their system is. I also recall the line, which I paraphrase, 'it may be called Lifeblood, but sadly that is what this album is in desperate need of'.

Dear oh dear.

Agree with this. I remember the headline I read as being "blood on the tracks"......

From Wikipedia:
A negative review came from Q, rating the album with a 1.5 out of 5, the magazine said that the album was: "Miserable and insipid."
