Kind of like a trilogy, 37 tracks across RTF, Futurology and the associated B-sides/bonus's

Ok album with no REAL good song.
That’s it.
Just like TUVL (had some song that was almost up there though).

Maybe they’ve lost it/given up now.

And take Nicky off the mic to sing entire songs.

I hope some of the songs will grow a little but doubt one’ll listen to this album much at all.

Really need to get round to doing alternative RTF / Futurology tracklists using b-sides and swapping some of the tracks. Critical Thinking also feels like a continuation of Europa Geht Dutch Mich.

The more I read the comments, the more I know I'm going to like this album.

Waiting til 00.00 here on the mainland to listen to it with decent headphones on Spotify.

Been loving all the promo they've been doing for it. They wouldn't be doing so much if they weren't happy with it.

First listen I’ve really liked it. Loved being baptised. Really great sound to the album. Thought that TUVL sounded really flat sonically

Or know it won’t sell itself.

I agree the promo has been great and the album is lovely, it has meaning and depth, I've played it through only once. The bonus single are very Nicky songs, he sings Let The Light Return and the lyrics and music are lovely. James sings Johatsu, about a quiet shopping arcade and not being a ghost. I think it sounds a bit like a Lifeblood song. I have only bought the vinyl and bonus single to start with and I really like all the tracks.

Critical Thinking is a fantastic track.

And the sequence into Decline and Fall makes perfect sense.

I heard James saying recently that TUVL was them trying to sound like they were in a snow globe (or something like that), & I feel like I get what they were going for more with that album now. Even the Tenby beach photo on the front could make a cool snow globe scene

On first listen Critical Thinking (the track) is hilarious, in a raise your fist in the air & shout “Go on Nicky” kind of way! Had me smiling from ear to ear

Had a first listen all the way through on headphones in the dark ha!

Main thoughts:

1. The singles are generally the best songs.
2. People Ruin Paintings is my favorite Manics single in yonks. Gorgeous production and arrangement.
3. Nicky songs are all great. This needs to be a new thing.
4. My Brave Friend has my favorite melody I think.
5. This is real 80s indie guitar. Loads of arpeggios. Peter Buck could be playing Being Baptised.
6. This album is a poppier Futurology. Love it.
7. We need a Nicky fronted PiL version of the Manics.

First listen on vinyl just finished. Going to check out the bonus track 7”, then listen again to the album on Apple Music.
Initial thoughts is that CT is a distillation of everything they’ve been toying with/heading towards from RTF onwards. But this is the REM IRS years, super lean, tight pop songs version.

It looks like we are on similar pages after the first listen
