I signed up for the meet and greet offer and ticket offer and didn't even buy an album! Don't tell Wire!

I love how James sounds like he's singing backwards on Deleted Scenes! That's some filter.
Pink Floyd's 15th album was The Endless River. Queen had Made In Heaven. Status Quo's was 1+9+8+5. The Fall had The Infotainment Scan. Genesis was Calling All Stations. Those above bands have nothing to do with the band or the new album. But compared the Manics are in better shape. While tab open Deep Purple (I've read Sean snarked) had 1996/7's Purpendicular. And Miles Davis didn't have a 15th album. Jethro Tull, Under Wraps. Go on, last one I can think of The Rolling Stones Emotional Rescue. To have reached this far. Not just the albums, reading this point. The band sound not as fresh as they started but still more than enough to give the listener something more to hang onto. There's probably better albums by other bands but to compare even any 80's Pink Floyd albums with CT_ and the Manics come off with a better album. It's the end but not just yet. I'm confident CT_ is going to climb the top ten of Manics albums. But no idea where exactly yet. Bring on the 16th and leave us on the tarmac of 15's cover! |

I dunno about genius… but the title brings to mind a Sesame Street character objecting to the mis-use of edible treats as the object of art, misunderstanding that representing a thing is not necessarily the thing itself. Or is it actually a subtle criticism of protestors throwing soup in galleries?

3 or 4 listens, and it's settling in nicely. I already really liked three of the four singles and Decline & Fall works far better as part of the album than when exposed as a single. Critical Thinking is absolutely hilarious and instantly became a favourite, so the open 5 tracks are a really good run.
Things dip slightly with Dear Stephen (which I know is a favourite of many). It's growing on me but feels a little musically lightweight and the lyric is undermined by Wire being unable to bring himself to criticise his hero or explain what he needs forgiving *for*. But then I've never quite understood the appeal of The Smiths, so a song that's inspired by would always had a hard job to convince me (a song inspired by Marr's work with The The on the other hand...) Being Baptised took a couple of listens but I'm really getting into it now. My Brave Friend feels influenced by them covering Echo and the Bunnymen's Bring On The Dancing Horses - I quite like it musically but the lyric - however heartfelt - is clumsy. The final four songs make a strong outro though. If the verses of Out Of Time Revival are stronger than the chorus, I can forgive it for the Futurology vibe. Deleted Scenes and Late Day Peaks are probably the most successful of the 80s influenced tracks. And then it ends with OneManMilitia which is basically The Stooges fronted by Howard Devoto, which is as close to my sweet spot as you can get (Wire's phrasing on this track is so close to Devoto's here I'd be surprised if it weren't deliberate). I love the guitars that take us out to the end of the record. Then there are the bonus tracks, both of which are unlucky not to make the album cut. Let The Light Return reminds me of Dying Breeds (obviously a good thing), lodged itself in my brain straight away ('It's not easy...') and I love that thick keyboard sound on the outro. And it's been pointed out already that Johatsu recalls All Alone Here, but is a more successful rewrite for me - and another instant earworm ('I want you to know that I'm not a ghost yet'). As things stand I'd probably swap both for Dear Stephen and My Brave Friend, but it's still early days. The one thing the album doesn't have is any kind of unified feel. Tracks 8-11 form an 80s E.P. but that aside there's no obvious identity. It shouldn't matter as the songs are good but it does feel more of a collection of songs than an album. Maybe that unity will reveal itself in time. |

When I collected my red vinyl, the album was playing in the store and the guy said 'it's a great album we've got it on now'. It was on Being Baptised track and sounded brilliant. I thought it was really nice they were playing it in the shop.
I have played the album over quite a lot now. I completely love Critical Thinking. I think Nicky sounds so real. I also love Decline & Fall and all the singles. I think Deleted Scenes is one of the very best songs I've heard. I also love Late Day Peaks and ONEMANMILITIA. I love this album and on the bonus track single b side Johatsu is lovely and kind of magical and A side Let The Light Return is great. I only wish they has included lyrics on the insert, though I love the picture esp. Nicky, also the credits low left are very small. Last edited by rosetree; 15-02-2025 at 16:51. |

Will listen when I get home a bit later tonight. Maybe there’s not much to really report? Usually there’s at least one FD’er that’s hot on it…

Critical Thinking demo has slightly different lyrics, mentioning the “super elite and the super woke”
Nick sings the demo to My Brave Friend People Ruin Paintings is a lovely acoustic version Most of the others sounded quite similar to the final tracks to me, though I have only listened once. |

Thank you, I may track down for a listen before never returning to them. Other the JFPL demo's, none have ever really captured me.
