Oh well, Midlake have a song that is one sentence repeated over and over. Beat that if you can Mr Wire!

I'm still listening to this album loads and loving it. None of the new album gloss has worn off for me, which is the mark of a truly great record.
I am, however, a tiny bit disappointed to hear them talking about the next album being a riff dominated, mighty rock 'n' roll beast of a record...as that's exactly the type of record I'd love to hear from them next and the fact that that's what they're SAYING it's going to sound like, means it almost certainly won't! ![]() |

If singles were still around I don't think we'd have had 2 albums, and to me both have tracks which would have been better as b-sides. RTW flowed better as an album and Futurology stutters in places. It's a bit like The Police album Zenyatta Mondatta in a lot of ways, only it hasn't sold several million copies.

Now we've had a month or so to live with the album, what's the verdict? For me, I'm impressed by its influences and ambition, and I like very nearly all of it, but don't love any of it; it simply lacks the emotional heartbeat at the core of the band's best work. As a contrast, RTF is less consistent but has some genuinely moving songs such as Running Out Of Fantasy and the title track.

The sheen of the album has come off a fair bit.
I still like the album, I love that using it for music to shower to has me finishing earlier and earlier in the tracklisting. First I'd finished by Between The Clocks And The Bed, now I'm all done by Europa Geht Durch Mich. Worst I've ever heard the album described (Not on this forum) was "half-baked naval-gazing dirges"! Well I don't agree with that! This is probably a no less than number 4 in the rankings. But it's not higher than the first two. Trouble is, I've forgotten what my top two Manics albums are as I've been listening to Futurology that much! |

I still like Futurology a lot, it's a bit of a mess, although in a good way, like GT is. The title track, Divine Youth and View from Stow Hill have grown on me a lot. Got bored of Europa but have somehow rediscovered it again. And decided SPLAM is actually great. |

I do find myself starting to skip the odd track now - the novelty of SPLAM has definitely worn off, and don't really like Stow Hill - but I still think it's a very strong album. But I like Rewind The Film too.
