Did you not see the bit in the same interview where he described PFAYM as their Abbey Road? Pre-album hyperbole is one thing, but the man is clearly deluded.

I did. He often describes his younger self as deluded and I'm sure he knows he still is... But I wasn't commenting on the 70-track idea. I'm just saying I'm glad they don't want to persist with the "mass communication" idea for the next album.

70 songs. Imagine if they did a JFPL type tour where they played the entire album followed by a greatest hits set. Looking at a 6 hour gig! Haha.

I think it might be potentially quite cool if they let themselves loose and put out a mixed bag type of album with tons of stuff on it, I like how he's brought up the Magnetic Fields' 69 Love Songs in the interview as well, as that's the finest example of a multi-disc epic I know of.

Having thought about this some more I think they should make a sprawling concept rock opera thing based on Nicky's Doctor Who script. With returning motifs to ease the workload on James coming up with 70 tracks worth of distinct melodies, they could also do a deal of some sort to get the Doctor Who theme in there somewhere (or just invite Muse on a few tracks to advise which notes you can change so you don't get sued ) and it could be a glorious, amazing, flawed experiment that 90% of fans would both hate and deem a failure. That's what I'd like to hear anyway. I'm only half-joking.

I'd actually support this idea! I hate Doctor Who but a sprawling concept album is YES. They'd no doubt have to steal some ideas from Mellon Collie and the Infinite Sadness too /hopeful.

No, I think that would be epic!

i think this is ace title, am really hoping for 70 3min blasts of motown junk / you love us style venom with a scatter gun approach lashing out at every thing from the evils of the internet to queueing up at the post office (should be subtitled what pisses the wire off)

I dunno, seems to me that a lot of people are being a wee bit cynical. When i first read that statement Nicky made it immediately struck me as an (maybe slightly tongue-in-cheek) exaggerated intention or nucleus of an idea rather than a solid intention. I really doubt they are going to do 70 tracks, but even if they do i'll be very eager to hear it.
I don't necessarily think that if some songs miss the mark that it is a bad thing as such. Not everything on Know Your Enemy or Sandinista! is great but as stand alone albums they are what they are and in the end so what? Not -everything- a band does is going to be great. I've always liked KYE and a big part of that is the sheer lopsidedness of it all, it's interesting listening even if some of it isn't great.

To me this is the Manics we're talking about and they're a special band, different to most other bands. People can't expect The Holy Bible with every new album and each passing year and for a band past 40 i think they're doing remarkably well, quality control-wise. It's no secret that the older songwriters get the more underwhelming their output gets (generally but i'm sure there are opposite examples that i'm not thinking of).

Even if Nicky is talking balls at least there is an intention for something a bit more out of the ordinary there. I for one can't wait

I'd be happy with a proper Manics double album - 2 discs, 12 songs on each one.

The more i think about it, the more i want to hear this album. The last one really really let me down as it was just poor in so many ways, so with 70 songs of Failure and Hatred by law of averages we should be able to retreive a good few albums out of it!

Not the 70 tracks, no, but I can see Wire throwing an artistic wobbly. They should lock him in a room to make another solo album, so he gets it out of his system.

And burn all copies of said solo album, of course.
