I disagree about Futurology being the wrong track to open with, just to be annoying!

Listened to Combat Rock by The Clash recently and thought that Futurology is similar to that in many ways - front loaded with single-type tracks, then it suddenly veers off into different styles with guest vocalists. Futurology isn't quite as weird, though

I think this is my first post not in the Sound and Vision section and not concerning my soon (well, 6 months to go) to be born first child (whom, incidentally, my wife said to me, without any irony and without any thought to the possible musical reference (I checked this thoroughly afterwards with a polygraph test) "How would you feel if we called it James, if it is a boy" to my utter amazement and veiled delight that it wasn't me that had to suggest it, and then try to crawl out of the Manics reference like a snake covered in lard.)

Anyhoo, now I'm back on track (I think - if there was anything in that last sentence that wasn't entirely grammatically correct or non-confusing, please feel free to let me know), Futurology.

Fucking Brilliant.

I've been waiting since 1997 for the Manics to produce another album that I play constantly and enjoy more on every listen. JFPL got close, but this is just awesome. Hats off guys, there were moments I didn't think you had it left in you. I'm so glad I was so, so wrong.

Matt

Wow, you're quite right. Didn't notice that before.

4ever Delayed is a song that Futurology (the track) should be. They're both very similar in the verses (to my ears anyway) and it just seems to be the better song.

Forever Delayed is forever destined to be their best 'lost' song. Most other bands would have had that as the lead single from an album, not tossed away as the token new song on a b-sides collection. It's been said many times that it would have fitted quite nicely on Lifeblood, which I totally agree with.

Agreed. They played it live not too long ago didn't they, around the Postcards era

4'Ever Delayed was pulled out unexpectedly during the Tigers dates at the end of 2007. I only saw them play it once, back in 2002. Wish it'd been a double A side with Grace of God or an EP track or something, may have had more longevity in their minds.

They should play 4ever Delayed live, lots of bands play their best b-sides live and they become in a lot of cases just as well known as the hit singles for bands. You can be pretty much sure within a year they won't be playing anything from Futuroloy live except maybe one song, look at RTF and Postards, one song each live nowadays, Lifeblood nothing, KYE maybe 1 song every now and then, SATT is now just down to one song live too. Sad

RTF is still getting 2-4 songs live, depending how long they play for.

It was great in the winter 2007 tour. I saw both dates at Brixton. on the second one, Nicky said something about the song, then followed it with "but we released TBTGOG instead. What a big pile of shit that was."

The band seem to fear playing unexpected songs. You can easily predict the sets these days, save for the odd curio: forever delayed in winter 2007, Born To End in summer 2007, Sorrow 16 on some of the JFPL dates, Ready For Drowning on the first RTF tour, Sleepflower on some PFAYM dates.

It's such a shame. They know that most fans know the big songs, and the steer the sets towards that. I think they fear the reaction of fans if they drop the 'big' songs, not knowing that most of us may not want to hear EMG or Tolerate, but would instead love to hear Removables or Nobody Loved You.

they don't need to drop the big songs tho and they shouldn't drop Tolerate, it was one of their biggest singles and would disappoint those that go to one gig, which despite this forum is the majority

It would disappoint me if they dropped Tolerate too!
