This. It was as lively as/livelier than Glasgow Barrowlands on 8 December. I have bruises and a lost voice from last night. Condemned and Platitudes I suppose I'm happy with, but would've loved Comfort Comes, of course...

Last night was incredible. Fucking incredible.
They were my first ever gig aged 15 and the last time I saw them proper (festivals aside) must have been TIMTTMY tour c.98? I was a little nervous with the whole THB thing and re-visiting your youth, killing your heroes but fucking hell! I drove a 320-mile round trip last night and it blew me away, I was still ecstatic at 3am this morning - what an absolutely joyous experience for the whole thing, I felt like I was floating for the first 30 minutes or so. So thanks to everyone who was there last night for making it fucking amazing and putting a massive smile on an ageing man. |

So going into last night's gig I'd seen the Manics perform ninety nine different songs throughout the year. When asked what song I'd like to bring up my century I'd reply there was one song I've utterly wanted to hear performed that would be so fitting for it, but as it had never been performed in the twenty three years since it's release I wasn't holding my breath.
And then they went and bloody well played it! |

I hate myself for it a bit but I've ruined most the surprised for myself over the years. I remember before the 2003 gigs reading on Planet Sound on teletext that they were going to do Die In The Summertime and Take The Skinheads Bowling. I remember in 2005 getting the email about Past, Present & Future mentioning how they were gonna be playing Holy Bible stuff. I remember 2007 seeing the Sleepflower rehearsal video on the site.. Now with twitter Nicky's tweeting about this or that sounding great in rehearsals.. I always try to get to the first night of the tour now but when I haven't I always check the sets anyway. I should be able to ignore everything and be surprised but i can't, just don't have the discipline. But now, sure loads of us do it, start to expect things that we'd probably consider surprised otherwise. But they do still surprise from time to time, Condemned To Rock N' Roll was a hell of a curveball!

I left after THB so it was basically one of the best gigs I've ever been to.

Not too bothered about missing it. Will stay for the hits tomorrow night though, I was also facing a 6 hour drive home afterwards!

Bit late as spent most the day travelling and been too tired to post since I got home. Great gig; the crowd were definitely up for it (the band commented on this at least twice, so not sure what anyone saying people looked bored are on about). I got quite crushed for most of it, whereas that didn't happen at any of the December gigs I was at (although I wasn't as central for those as last night). There were lots of crowd surfers too!
Condemned and GP were surprises, but I'm afraid I wasn't personally that excited about either (but that's because I'm not a fan of either songs generally speaking; the performances themselves were fine and I get why others loved it). Not sure about The Everlasting with a backing track though; either do it simply acoustic or full band...or not at all and play something else ![]() Doesn't bode well I'm this tired after one gig though...think I'm getting old ![]() Last edited by Abstract Unknown Girl; 31-05-2015 at 21:44. |

Struggled to get excited at all for THB set having now been to hear it played live twice now. Was only really interested in the second set (which i'm convinced was shorter than the Barrowlands in December?).

Same length but Condemned and Everlasting really ate into the 2nd set

Fantastic gig - really nice venue and good crowd. Loved Condemned, and no idea why the crowd would have seemed to look bored on that as it went down really well, unless we were all just watching the playing in awe! I actually enjoyed GP - one of the better ones off that album and not one I've seen played much. The acoustic Everlasting was def a bit weird with the backing track though, which is a shame as I normally love James' acoustic versions.

I saw The Kinks in the early 90's. And at the start, Ray Davies came on (Wearing a fucking mac like he'd just got off the train, the poser!) and played some of their best songs on an acoustic guitar. He then went behind the curtain which opened and the band played a full set.
Which unfortunately contained their attempts to sell "Phobia" to the crowd who had come along to hear their 60's hits played by a full band... Instead of an acoustic run though. I mention this because at least James puts more effort into his acoustic sets! Ray looked really miserable. Although "The Everlasting" to a backing track. You could have got two other songs in that time. I couldn't make any of the shows this year, but THB live was incredible. |
