Well i've heard the 30 second previews now, and i really really don't like what i'm hearing. An album full of AutumnSongs, fucking hell i never thought this band had it in them to churn out such shit. I dunno if i could sit through two gigs on this forthcoming tour...

It really isn't an album of Autumnsongs. Even for an intentionally commercial album, there's a broader range than that.

Ok maybe it isn't that bad once i've heard the full versions, but at the moment it sounds that way.

I moved there four weeks ago yeah, now i can use the train into Birmingham instead of the horrible hagley road i'm well chuffed!

What's up with linking this album to SATT? It doesn't sound like SATT to me. It's different in a way all Manics albums were different to each other. After few listens I can tell it's good. At first I thought it was a bit too orchestrated, but I don't have problem with that now. Postcards from a Young Man or/and Some Kind of Nothingness should be the next singles. Album that grows on me the more I play it.

It isn't. At all! Not very similar to SATT to begin with and much more diverse (and WAY better, but that's a matter of opinion) than that record.

So far... from the... previews... ahem... I'm enjoying it. It's a good quality album. I think the similarity to SATT is that it's the second of their post-wilderness years albums to be upbeat, so it's a natural comparison, but this has got much greater depth.

I share Richey83's frustrations with Billion Balconies... It's a great song marred by a big set of lyrical misteps. HOWEVER... The words are well-chosen. If you ignore the fact the topic is probably a bit grinchy, the topic is USED very well.

Album List for me then...

1. The Holy Bible
Journal For Plague Lovers
Everything Must Go
Postcards From A Young Man
Generation Terrorists
Know Your Enemy
Gold Against The Soul
This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours
Send Away The Tigers
Lifeblood

Yep, very true. It's more like TIMTTMY in an instrumental sense, some diverse and unexpected arrangements, but with bigger guitars. There's no Autumnsongs at all in my opinion, not that I dislike Autumnsong particularly. At the moment I'm still disappointed though.

I don't want to come across as all 'I've heard the album/superior/blah blah blah', but I was really put off and scared by how average the thirty second clips sounded. They sounded awful. However they are not representative of the quality of the songs or the album at all, so don't try to judge them too much on those disjointed bits, because in my opinion they're much better than those suggest.

I disagree with the TIMT comparisons too. Nothing on PFAYM is as mind-numbingly boring and coma-inducing as the second half of TIMT or The Everlasting. Not even Hazelton Avenue.

Also, you ask for comparisons with MSP, but from what I can see, 90's retro hasn't quite kicked off yet, whilst long guitar solos have been decidedly out of fashion for years. It's as if they're trying to do 'mass communication' with a serious misguidance as to what the masses want right now.
I think you're right. The Lady Gaga comments are a bit...strange.

Surely if you're a rock band, or a pop rock band, they way to attempt a "mass communication" is perhaps to be more like U2, Muse or any number of indentikit indie pop bands that are floating about at the moment?

My criticism of the record remains, on repeated listens, that it's just sub standard Manic Street Preachers.

I can see why the band would think that going back to the sound that got them number 1 records and BRIT awards is a good thing but sadly they're showing their age a bit by thinking the public would still lap that up when the industry has moved on. If Muse can sell out stadiums and headline the biggest festivals in the country isn't that what you should be aiming to sound like?

Part of me thinks this record is just there to satisfy the record label after the singleless last record. They made all the right noises about it before the release. The lead single has a video with some famous people in it. The record has a distinct "everything but the kitchen sink thrown in" sort of vibe with orchestral bits everywhere, guest appearances, gospel choirs, massive over production, sparkly clean guitar sounds with bright whirling solos, lyrics that you can hear, vocals that make sense, huge drumming and even letting Nicky do yet another song which also sounds big. It's like the best bits of the Manics thrown into one.

I guess I just happen to think the whole thing is a massively ill-advised experiment.

Oh and I bet it cost the label an arm and a leg as well. Sounds like it.

I have listened to the album 15 times or so since Wednesday (obsessive? me?), and yeah, it's a grower.
The 30 seconds previews are totally misleading, when I heard them I was quite worried but the album ends up sounding quite cool. It's coherent, full of grand and lovely melodies, and each song is more interesting with every listen (even bloody Hazelton Avenue!). Musically, I'd place it somewhere between EMG and Lifeblood.
Highlights: Some Kind Of Nothingness, A Billion Balconies Facing The Sun and (unexpectedly!) The Future Has Been Here 4 Ever.

"mass communication" was just bullshit speak for saying they made an album of predominantly summery, upbeat songs after spending a year writing music to the last words of Richey. They're hardly going to say they want arguably their most poppy, commercial album to be a flop are they. What I'm saying is they made the album they wanted to make and "mass communication" was just a soundbite, nothing more. A poor soundbite at that. And he shouldn't be bothered anyway. The masses are a bit thick and have poor taste in music - if you don't believe me just have a look at the What not to buy Music Guide - also known as the Top 40. I know the top 40 has already been shit but the 2000s have taken it to another dimension. Seriously look at it. I haven't bothered for about 10 years and I'm glad - My God it's horrendous. Whoever said the industry has changed they weren't joking.

I think it is a really good album, worth the time and money.

Some really nice guitar solos from James, among other things...

I'm just enjoying it for what it is. If it sells tons of copies and the tour goes well, great. If it doesn't, I don't really care. I like it...

Hey stop the hating on TIMT. That is a great album period. This is a good album also. I won't call it great until it actually comes out and I've had time to reflect.

But seriously. The people who gripe about TIMT and profess to loving GATS shouldn't be taken seriously. GATS had maybe 3 great songs and a lot of filler. It never sounded like an album but a singles collection with only two good singles. TIMT is a complete album.

So is Postcards in my opinion. Just because Richey wrote some clever lyrics doesn't mean the album (GATS) was sonically good. TIMT is a fine balance in my opinion and this album isn't bad either, if not leaning more to the sonically oriented.

And this album does grow significantly on multiple listens.
