oh dear. I fear this album is a love or hate camp and nothing in between.

I know they've been going 20+ years but there's absolutely no excuse for this barrage of sub-radio 2 friendly, stadium appeasing gash. They once proved, at their peak, you could be bombastic, employ comical chest-beating rhetoric & be of ludicrous mass appeal yet still have a bit of soul, power & integrity. This utterly meaningless piece of tosh is just a little bit horrid - the obligatory "guitar solo" lacks absolutely any spirit or pezazz (I loved 'Motorcycle Emptiness' as much as the next man!!) and the lyrics are vacuous and empty - much like the song. The execrable B-sides on the CD make me think of a really poor pub covers band. Well, at least they're sticking to their roots....Totally without merit, possibly worse than the last Placebo comeback. Gah!"
What a Norman.

I must admit, it sounds much better on my stereo than it did listening on my iPod.
I like 4 tracks, dislike 4 tracks and the other 4 are mediocre.
I'd probably give it 5 out of 10 overall.

I've not been able to bring myself to listen to it for a couple of weeks. Let Robeson Sing came on earlier and reminded me why the Manics are great. I'm going to sit through PFAYM again and look for some positives.

yes please:
postcards from a young man
some kind of nothingness

if you're gonna push me:
golden platitudes
all we make is entertainment
don't be evil

meh, shrug, whatever:
it's not war
the descent
a billion balconies

nope, not for me:
hazelton avenue
auto intoxication
i think i've found it
the future has been here 4ever

to conclude, there's 2 songs i really like, 6 i'm fairly ambivalent about, 4 i'm starting to actively dislike.

Songs I really like:

Don't Be Evil

Songs that are good enough if you ignore the lyrics:

Billion Balconies Facing The Sun

Songs that are okay/average/fine/meh:

The Descent
All We Make Is Entertainment
Some Kind Of Nothingness
It's Not War
Postcards From A Young Man

Songs I dislike:

Golden Platitudes
The Future Has Been Here 4ever
Auto Intoxication

Songs I really don't like to a point where they make me cringe:

Hazelton Avenue
I Think I've Found It

Yeah it was, sorry, should have put it in the thread about the single shouldn't I? Sadly I think the single review is about right. At first I thought it was harsh but I found myself agreeing with all their points. I do like the album an awful lot though.

The album is a little perplexing on first listen...this isn't a bad thing. Hmm, not loving this so far....
