Have you not got the album yet Gutless? Sorry, I don't know if you live in the UK or abroad (saying that, it's still not officially out yet is it, I just got lucky and got it yesterday thankfully!)

I'm getting it from HMV tomorrow, hopefully my Townsend purchases will arrive as well! Yeah, I'm a UK resident so all systems go tomorrow!

Ah right I might go into HMV this week just to laugh at how much they're charging for the album. I've not bought a new release from HMV instore since 2004 I think, they're always a few quid more than online.

Very possibly the finest collection of songs of the last decade. Can't wait for my signed copy to come!

Definitely my least favourite Manics album. Such a shame.

I can't see what's to be so negative about! We all knew it wouldn't be JFPL or THB part 2. Simply a filler-free collection of no-nonsense rock n roll anthems, which let's face it, in this day and age we all badly need!

I'm on my third listen. I haven't really looked at these review threads about the album, as I wanted to give it a good listen first. I tried listening from two stand points, as a Manics fan, and if I had never heard of them and this was the first album I heard (I know that was a bit difficult to do) I really do like it. My initial feelings about songs have stayed the same. And very honestly, I like it better than "SATT"(ducks). I like SATT, but there's only a few tracks I really like, there are quite a few that I really dislike and even hate, if I never heard "Autumn Song" again it would be too soon.
So, I'm not gonna go into a total review I'll just break it down easy: REALLY LIKE Postcards From a Young Man Some Kind of Nothingness Auto-Intoxication Golden Platitudes A Billion Balconies Facing the Sun Don't Be Evil (don't think it should have closed the album though) LIKE It's Not War, yadda, yadda The Descent The Future Has Been Here 4 Ever (although the Godfather line is cringe worthy) DON'T REALLY LIKE Hazelton Avenue All We Make is Entertainment REALLY DON'T LIKE I Think I Found It

The songs just have no direction, the lyrics are fairly awful and they've just thrown as much pointless pomp at it as possible. Purely as a reaction to JFPL. It's boring.

Even the disc of the original demos is awesome. I will be loving it for a long time! Everyone else is entitled to their opinion but i certainly am not disappointed!

After several weeks listening and letting it sink I have to say structure wise It is the most interesting post THB, not just just the stand Verse Chorus Verse pattern but adding in breakdowns/build ups etc fantastic.
(It's Not War) Just The End Of Love - 4/10 Terrible Opener and in my opinion the biggest dissapointment on the album, it's a very standard generic Manics song that was done several times on SATT. Postcards From A Young Man - 8/10 More adventourous and really where the album kicks off, I thoughly enjoyed it and found the ending fantastic and it really resonated well with me Some Kind Of Nothingness - 8/10 Oh the ''Never Stop'' bit on this is emotional and perfect, it sounded exactly as it should sound and Mculloch was brilliant, he has a very Bowie/Curtis esque voice and lyrically a Nicky Wire highlight for me in his career. The Descent (Pages 1 & 2) - 7/10 Simple, safe lovely backing choir although I much preferred the live unplugged version on ClydeFM. Probably needs a rougher edge and would have sat nicely next to TJSS on JFPL Hazelton Avenue - 7/10 Catchy riff mellow Beatles style lyrics with a soft Zepplin lyric and really brings through those Beatles influences. Probably the closest they got to Van Halen meets the Supremes Auto-Intoxication - 7/10 Good musically but did not think much of the lyrics, still i love the brash acoustic intro Golden Platitudes - 10/10 A favourite manics song, daring and big, sounds so moving sad and challenging loved the ''Colonise the moon'' line with its backing vocals the piano is excellent and lyrically Nicky Wire's absolute finest since A Design For Life I Think I Found It - 6/10 Doesn't deserve the slating it's got, they tried something and it didn't go brilliantly but it's different, nice intro and I love James's vocals towards the end of the song A Billion Balconies Facing The Sun - 8/10 Lovely bass line from Mr Mckagen, the lyrics are once again on form and the guitars are very Slash esque, it's what i wanted to hear as sometimes it feels as though James holds back on his guitar and stops prematurely in a solo, nice to see him push the extra four bars in here and there. All We Make is Entertainment - 9/10 Celebratory and musically fun, love the little toy keyboard sound and Seans drums here are brutal, he hits things hard, breakdown and solo is one of my personal highlights, a true manics song. A 'You Love Us' from an older generation. The Future Has Been Here 4 Ever - 8/10 Lyrically saves itself as Nicky asks questions of his audience at the end, i'm one of the 'WTF was the Godfather 3 lyric about' people and the backing vocals saves a vocal for the non Nicky vocal fans. Brilliant solo, on a personal note I like his voice and think it may have sounded wrong and to cheesy if James sung it as its already being backed up by a lush choir. Don't Be Evil - 9/10 Can't get the lyric out of my head, sounds like a brutal enslaught albeit catchy and sums up the album well. I really wish Its Not War... was dropped for I'm Leaving You For Solitude and SKON or PFAYM were the opening singles, Solitude would be better for the album and more respectable a choice but this album can do well commercially and ranks nearer the top in terms of manics album. 1. The Holy Bible 2.Generation Terrorists 3.Postcards From A Young Man 4.Journal For Plague Lovers 5.Everything Must Go 6.Lifeblood 7.This Is My Truth... 8.Gold Against The Soul 9.Send Away The Tigers 10.Know Your Enemy |
