I've finished it. I thought it actually got better towards the end, or maybe it was me getting used to the narrative.

really? Tell me it gets better, cos the extract I read was absolutely, offensively bad.

Well I can't promise you'll agree but the 4REAL extract (i think that's what you read) is a bit rubbish, I'm not going to lie, the rest is really good, it gets edgy around the key events because obviously they do require a lot of tact, try it, if you find it offensive fine, but don't hold it against Ben.

I think it's very well written, and gets inside the mind of someone with the kind of problems we know Richey to have had really well. Reading fiction about real events and people we know a lot about is always going to be a bit cringe-worthy, but I think his 'inner voice' as Richey is really convincing and, ultimately, that's the point of the book.

None-too-impressed review in yesterday's Guardian
The other Manics are very lightly sketched...Sean Moore is simply inscrutable: Edwards has "no idea what he actually thinks about anything", and neither do we. Love the accompanying picture though:

i don't understand how one could ever desire to read a fictionalized take on richey edwards' life in 1st person. it's bound to be a cringe-fest.

Does anyone know if an audiobook of this is due out? I can't stand print books.

Seriously.
We learn that Edwards cut the phrase "4 REAL" into his arm (a notorious incident) to make "a dull night new . . . [You] painted the town red", and later that "each forkful [of food] feels like one step closer to vomiting". This is rather a low level of insight. What was Myers supposed to do? Attempt to induce anorexia and cut himself? This review seems harsh.

I bought this on a whim with a 3 for 2 offer a few weeks ago and read it in a couple of sittings. I was VERY unsure to start off with but as the book progressed I actually got really interested in the idea of "what if" regarding Richey.
I liked the idea of the "inner voice" and the struggle that existed and although it is hackneyed the idea of the Richey Manic personality taking over Richard was something that worked in the book as far as I was concerned. Towards the end of the book I felt a total sense of sadness and I actually was really moved by the ending-it wasn't really about the book or the written ending itself but the "what-if" for Richey and that stayed with me for a good few days after reading the book. For a lot of fans it has always been the unknown of what happeded since Richey spent time in his car that has made it hard to take and the book captured this really well. It just made me think about the ongoing loss issue for the family and the band and as always it still goes on. I know it doesn't make anything easier but if you get it as a freeby like I did you might just find it interesting.

@Wireobsessed, onh thank god, someone else who likes it, it did make me very sad, more so than I usually get over Richey, it's an emotional book, I do wish people would read it, it won't kill you to read a book you don't think you'll like.

I'm going to collect it in London on Thursday (thanks StandAndStare!) and I'm actually looking forward to reading it. The positive comments make me a bit more optimistic about it, but I never intended to judge it for more than I think it really is: a speculation written in an "alternative" style.

I found some of the references to lyrics were a bit obscure at times and unessisary at times. At one point he actually used the term Tsunami to describe something Richey is thinking about...err Richey didn't write that one Myers.
I'm surprised he didn't have Richey round James' mum's house enjoying a glass of Ocean Spray.
