There hasn't been that much experimentation in their recent work, though, has there? Same verse-chorus-verse efforts at making a big anthem, just with a different beat behind it. I've never been a fan, but it's hard to see going from 'Don't Panic' to 'Every Teardrop is a Waterfall' as progress, unless they were intending to "progress" into becoming the most punchable band in the country.

Coldplay hasn't been experimental per se but they've not been afraid to play around with their sound and try out new things. The jump from the Parachutes/A Rush of Blood/X&Y trilogy to the sound elements on Viva La Vida may not seem massive to us who listen to our experimental rock troupes on regular basis, but on Coldplay's/a mainstream rock band's scale it's huge. The band felt X&Y was bloated and derivative of their past work and they knew they couldn't continue on that route without suffering a painful musical death in the process, and thus they decided to actively pursue something different and change gears for the next album. And kudos to them, they did it - multi-part suite songs, songs screaming to be hits turned instrumental in order to avoid that easy path, shoegazey rock-outs, big guitar moments switched to orchestral string riffs and a percussion kit which features a church bell as its integral part, heavier focus on an album as a whole rather than individual moments, etc. For a band who made their name with safe stadium singalong hits, it was a big leap and a risk. They've been a mainstream-geared band throughout their entire career and it's easy to dislike them because of that, and that's okay, but they're also a band who genuinely want to evolve and actively try out new things within their chosen route.

i don't agree with James's comment about Coldplay but that doesn't mean he's against bands changing style, just that what Brian Eno did with Coldplay didn't work. Just because something's experimental doesn't mean it's worthy. Sometimes it obvious they shouldn't have bothered
