Twas a good time to be a Manics fan. Weren't that many gigs considering. Still, everyone who didn't see them for the first time in 2001 had longer tours to go to. They've only done one calendar year without a gig since they started out.
Oddly, I've never met anyone who's said they got into em through Know Your Enemy, doesn't seem to be a popular album among fans.

The best buzz was 96 of course. EMG coming out and the first post-Richey disappearance shows. Lots of freaky looky likeys turning up to gigs was a bit disturbing however.......

2001 in Manchester for me, although being just 16 at the time tells the story - I'd only been to a small number of gigs prior to that. It was also the first time my parents and brother saw them too.

Saw them at Aston Villa leisure centre on EMG tour, never been so crushed and I'm sure they let more people in than the 2,000 capacity, but then didn't see them until Lifeblood.
Had tickets for a Truth gig but had to give away as coincided with my Uni registration day - I guess when I booked I wasn't optimistic about anyone wanting me. |

V2002, so more or less, although I got 'involved' somewhere between TIMT and KYE. Good theory, I'd say there's a decently sized venn diagram overlap between those who were old enough to be "into" a band like MSP in the late 90s/early 2000s and young enough to want to use an online forum for the past few years.

I was only 13/14 in 2001, so maybe a little bit young, although KYE was the first record I got by them, and it was the year I bought my first Manics single. 2002 was the year I first saw them live, on the FD tour.

I reckon 94 would have been a lot better.

I think we need another poll to find out how old people were the first time they saw the Manics, cos I think that might well back up the theories here.

My fist MSP gig was the Lonodn date of the tour just after Motown Junk was released. I didn't even want to go as my wife had bought the record and didn't want to go on her own. I hated the song at first but it grew on me. And then i noticed JDB!

It was yeah, at brixton, kept on hearing about the holy bible, the website clip of intravenus agnostic, and then found that soul made me want to investigate further. There was a girl who i was kinda seeing who was very into them whick helped too.
Seeing them live is what made me love them though, the idea of a literate rock band was new to me but exactly what i'd been sort-of looking/hoping for, seeing as i'd always been a bit of a sponge for (without meaning to sound ridiculous) culture, something that seemed rare amongst my friends back then, had only really seen a few hopeless metal bands before that so it was a massive thing, 'our band could be your life' and all that.
