I remember being very disappointed with the album when I picked it up on release day. I was already baffled by the single, "The Love Of Richard Nixon", which came across as a joke. It quickly became an album I owned but never listened to.

Reappraising it now, it's not a good album. There are some songs on there that I like and many of the b-sides from that era are actually quite excellent, but it's just not a Manics album. That was always my biggest gripe. But hey, they tried something different, it didn't really work for me and that's just how it goes sometimes. I see Futurology as being a more creatively successful version of Lifeblood in so much as it still feels like the Manics whilst being very different to anything they've done before.

But with all of that being said...I'm probably the only person on FD who actually likes "Fragments".

And just to show that there are no hard feelings Lifeblood, here's my old cover of "Solitude Sometimes Is". Happy Birthday kid.

I like Fragments, Emily and Always/Never. Deal with it.

1985 and Solitude Sometimes Is would have ranked among their best singles from this side of the millennium. The actual singles were terrible.

As an album, I think it's missing some 'glue' and this was the first period where they started to annoy me. In addition to Empty Souls, there were too many b-sides that made me go 'But he's just sung that verse! Fuck this lazy shit!'.

Great album, terrible single choices.

I remember the release day... waiting outside Resident Records for it to open, then sitting on Brighton beach in the freezing cold, listening to it on my discman. Pretty much ideal for an album like Lifeblood.

Probably my second favourite record by the band. What a pity they never plough the same furrow (steady) twice. I like SATT and love JFPL, but I'd have been quite happy if they'd continued making records like this for the last decade.

As the years have gone on (10, wow!) Lifeblood grows more and more on me. I always remember watching TOTP and seeing Nixon performed and thinking it was cool, especially the solo, and that the guys looked cool in their leather jackets and Sean with long hair. Then on the Lifeblood tour I got to see the Manics for the first time at Manchester and loved it. The album reminds me of cold and winter, not just because of the time of year it came out but it has a somewhat icy echo throughout to a long of songs.... least I think so Happy 10th birthday Lifeblood!

10 years? Can't believe it!!! I will always remember Lifeblood as first Manics' album I've heard. I got into their music with Forever Delayed and Lipstick Traces but those are compilation CDs not albums XD

Listening to it now actually. It's pretty good actually. Fell out of love with them at the time, but don't mind it now.

I think this might have been the only Manics album that I didn't buy on the day of release since I got into them; for some reason, I just didn't think it was going to excite me. I ended up getting it midweek during reading week, and it was perfect: exactly what I needed. It's easier to list songs I don't like than ones I do, so Emily, Always/Never and Fragments do nothing for me, but the others...the others are wonderful. Tis the perfect autumn/winter album.

10 years? That is crazy business! Absolutely adore this album. James' vocals are just gorgeous on it and I love Glasnost no matter what anyone says about that song!

A lovely, cold, swooshy, glassy, classy album.

The Love of Richard Nixon is one of my favourite singles of theirs... it just sounds so cool and futuristic. Though why James chose to sing it in a register too low for his range is beyond me.

I can't work out all the quote button business from my phone but...Mr Richey stated that Lifeblood is just not a Manics album!!
Well clearly it is and not just in the obvious sense that the band made it!
All of their albums are different so what the hell is a Manics album if this isn't?!

It's an album I have played from October - Febuary, at least once a week, since its release. It's a perfect winter Manics album. Listening to it on the commute from Cardiff to Newport through rain, blistering cold, etc. I have fond memories of the release and tours.
