10 years already? Wow.
Still one of the best sounding albums with the most creative songwriting. A pleasure to listen to. And those gigs really were something else.

JFPL is in my top 3 Manics albums and brings back great memories at a time in my life when I was very happy.
However, the tour was a bit of a disaster for me personally - I had bought tickets to go to three gigs - Roundhouse x2 and Wolverhampton. I came back from holiday in Dubai the night before the first date in London and I came down with pretty bad food poisoning, needless to say I didn't want to let that stop me from seeing the boys so I travelled to London on the day of the gig and I kind of felt okay. I went to the gig and all I remember is feeling like crap and I must have left half way through and gone back to my hotel. I missed the next two gigs! So I only got to see half a gig on that tour, something I'm still absolutely gutted about.

Ten years already? I know we always say it, but that's a bit of a shocker. The gigs were amazing, the album is one of my favourites.

They actually made it to the US to tour for this album - one of only 2 times they've done so this century. Caught them at a tiny club in Hollywood - almost everyone in attendance there had a British accent
Anyways, great show all around. |

Would put it at the very top end of their back catalogue. Especially as it absolutely came out of no where. But it's also what frustrates me about them as it sandwiched two of their artistically weakest albums to date.
One of my biggest regrets from following this band around for the last 20 odd years is not seeing them on this tour. Trouble was me and my partner were about to have a baby and they didn't tour around any venues in the North of England. Gigs looked amazing though! |

It's great but I probably listen to it the least of all their albums. I don't really know why.

Quote:
Although it sounds fantastic, it's hard for me to connect to any of the songs too much. They are like artistic pieces that you pull out and admire but then put away again. I haven't listened to any of the songs in a good while. And I was obsessed with this album when it came out. Must have listened to it daily for months. Travelled far for the JFPL gig too. But I just find it difficult now to emotionally connect to it. Even more so than The Holy Bible, which I do still listen to now and again. |

Re-listened to it for the first time in months today. I find it difficult. It was the first album they released whilst I was a fan, and so its always got a special place in my heart.
In hindsight though, it was clearly tough for them to do, and I think the marketing of the album (Williams Last Words being viewed as Richeys suicide note) left a really bad taste. Not blaming the band for that one, but always sticks out to me. Would love to hear something from it on the tour though... |

I think there is a reasonably good chance of getting JCEQT or Marlon JD.

I can't believe it's been ten years already. I actually love this album, despite being wary about them using Richey's lyrics after so long. But it's an absolute gem of an album.

In their top five albums for me. Can understand why it was a difficult experience for them though and why they have subsequently distanced themselves a bit from the album.
