I'm going for so-so. It's a fine guitar pop song but if I discovered it having never heard the band before I wouldn't be rushing to investigate further. It might grow on me and it's definitely better than Autumnsong.

I'm not convinced. The melody hasn't really revealed itself to me yet. I'll keep at it though!

Glad the majority of you seem to love it! Hopefully the record buying public in general digs it as much as you lot! Best of luck to the boys! |

Boring as fuck. Terrible lyrics. Repeated title again and again. Wish Nicky would stop writing such vague lyrics. Wish they'd just write good music instead of obsessing over "appealing to the masses" or whatever the fuck they're doing. I think they severely underestimate the masses.
Some of the plucked chords in the verse sound a bit like Tonight Tonight by the Pumpkins. |

Whatever comes from this album, I have no expectations of what it will sound like.
So on to the track, first impression was this is ok, but I need to listen to it more out of the car/bathroom. After a few listens now I'm back from work, it's a song with few pretensions. It's light on the ears, strings everywhere, and once you hear it live you'll bop along to it happily. Not sure how well it will chart, but the chorus is darned catchy. If you wanted another JFPL, you'll always be disappointed. It was a one off that they will never want to repeat. |

Nice to see Its Great Excellent Very Good climbing ever higher (49% at time of writing). Come on we can get it over 50%, we are "fans" after all!

I loved it managed to hear it on my way to work, made my morning. I had set my expectations at it being shit, though, so I was really happy. I think a lot of the people who are disappointed/hate it just have their hopes too high. Plus hearing Nicky sing just makes me laugh, it's never bad. Except when it is, obviously.

It's alright. That's all I'm really willing to give it at this stage.

Quite stirring and with a decent guitar solo.
Overall, not bad but a bit of an identikit hit single and nowhere near the standard the Manics should still be at. |

I loed JFPL, but loved SATT too. In different ways.
But, each time I listen to this new single I close my eyes and see a married couple laughing at a sofa in a DFS advert. I'm not sure that's a good thing... |

the idea of a lazy and unfair comparison to THB by mentioning JFPL is, well, lazy and unfair in itself... JFPL had very little in common with THB* (bar 'bag lady'). JFPL was musically very rich, it had dept in details and many layers to discover, even at its most 'pop' moments... and that is what i feel this song is lacking... the strings are very orchestral and grand, but the song itself feels flat and one-dimensional.
*musically, ignoring the R-factor

If like half of JFPL was SATT part 2, then this is SATT part 3. The Manics might as well call it a day. SHameless self-plagiarism.

the thing i used to love about the manics is that they never made the same album twice. it looks like those days are gone...

There's something about the riff/chorus which has me convinced it will, in a few years time, be used as the "jolly" indie music during a DFS "Bank Holiday Double Discount Sofa Sale" advert.
"THIS Bank Holiday (riff) there's double discount (riff) ON ALL LEATHER SOFAS (riff) This bank holiday ONLY (riff) at DFS (riff to fade)". In conclusion, waaay too jolly for me and here's hoping the album better be bloody good. |
