I'm sure it doesn't. I wanted to explain my different point of view on what I'd call pretentious and what I wouldn't.
Also, let's be honest, 85% of those polaroids are not even of his, so who (or whose work) are we exactly calling pretentious?

As Manics fans, I'd have thought we'd be comfortable with a little pretension. It's just that there's an invisible line you can't cross.

You are right Cricri Nicky has said he is not a photographer and this project was to preserve his fave polaroids and memories before they fade forever. Also a chance for Manics fans to see these polaroids and to fullfil a dream to work for his fave publisher. I can not see how you can call that pretentious?

might it not be - and this is no accusation against anyone but i cannot stop it being taken as such i suppose - that the more pretentious a fan is, the less pretentious the more "interesting" things the band do seem? all that Einstein time-space-relative shit and that.

It's an insight into the world of the band at certain times, anyone who expected anything more from it only has themselves to blame. I'm glad I only spent a tenner on it but I knew what I was getting - the photography of the Manics (and by extension Mitch).

I'm glad I own the book, although it's less interesting than the Forever Delayed book and the book of Clash photos by Bob Gruen that I have, and I never dig either of those out, so once it's away in a cupboard, I can't see myself feeling an urge at any point to dig it out to have a look.
It's a nice memento. Just a shame that it's so heavily-geared towards their least interesting years in terms of their image. Perhaps all the photos of trees was Mitch trying to make a subtle critique of their look around 1998-2001. "Hey Mitch, do you want to take a photo of us in the studio?" "No thank you, I take photo of bush instead. It look more exciting."

It's no surprise that Cult of Nicky is abbreviated to CON.

some fans are critical, some are gushing. I'm happily on Team Sceptical, but this wouldn't be the Manics fandom we know and love if there wasn't something to have an argument about, would it?

Ok, just got through the book today (it was a Christmas present). I really liked the test shots and Nicky's pictures. The ones from Mitch were...meh....I didn't like them that much (there are some exceptions of course), which is odd because you would think that the ones from the professional photographer would be more exciting/beautiful/whatever.
I have a thing for analogue photography anyway, so I really enjoyed the often criticised 'blurry trees' and the landscape pictures - I also make loads of tree/nature pictures with my analogue camera (lomography pictures), so I can understand why Nicky is fascinated by those. Nevertheless, I also can see why some people only see blurry trees in the pictures. It's a matter of personal taste and also a matter of one's own familiarity with photography in general, I guess. Oh, and I really liked the scratched polaroids, or the ones with stickers - some people on here moaned about them - they make the pictures unique and even more beautiful |

Scratched I like, stickers are just lazy. Same with Nicky's obsession for patching his clothes. It just looks a mess, co-opting someone else's designs onto something of their own - but in the most obvious and passé way imaginable (the opposite end of the Marilyn stamp spectrum, if you see what I mean), where the scratches are at least creative.
