I used to live out there, I seem to recall a steady diet of Boston's "More Than A Feeling" on the radio but never remember hearing Aldo Nova. Just an odd thing for me to hear it 3 times in 2 days.

Things are cyclical, Zee. For four months straight, you'll hear 'Hotel California' (or insert other song here), and then poof, it's gone for six months. Or you just flip to another station.

This is a question that can't be answered in one post, it needs whole essays. However, let's just shorten it to the examples of "la tristesse" and "arbeit mach frei".

I don't really speak French myself, but I do have a basic knowledge since I came from the Mediterranean part of Europe and as I speak Italian I have quite some knowledge about Romance languages.

So, let's try it out. Without phonetic transcribtion symbols, they're hard to type.

la tristesse - this one would be pronounced correctly if there was no final vowel sound "a" at the very end of the word, it should end with the consonant "s". Here however it conflicts with the mellody of the refrain of the song itself, three syllables are oviously needed there. And then there is that famous French "r" that we all know.

arbeit mach frei - all that makes it messed up here is his mispronounciation of "ei", which makes the whole thing sound completely different. German "ei" reads like "ai" as in the English greeting "Hi!" or the word "high" or "lie". The rest is pronounced correctly, more or less. We might still go into details with that German style "r" sound. Which actually differs in Austria.

there's almost no "r" in Arbeit, it's more long "a" so it's more accent or way of pronunciation but I would say he sang the word well. Only the frei is incorrect. but it's kinda cute

No. Arbeit is wrong too. He says "arbeet". As if it was "arbiet" not "arbeit". Many people mix up "ei" and "ie" in German.
And what you say about the "r" is true, so I said that's just detail. The "r" sound differs by individual rather than language itself.

And well, it's cute for sure, but with that pronounciation of vowels... You won't quite be understood, so some phonetic rules should be followed.

But you know what? The history of English language is complex, but to make it simple I can say it was born when the Celtics acquired the German language but in their own way. And then after there was The Great Vowel shift. Not too relevant to what we're talking right now, but it does come to my mind, you know... A Welshman trying to speak German.... Pretty historical.

Yes please! I feel a bit guilty for starting off this whole malarkey by worrying about gibberish instead of German. Let's be clear on this: JDB can try his hand on any language he wants as long as I gets both albums! Soonish!

I'm another one who totally agrees. Some Kind of Bliss was just a Manics song as The Girl from Tiger Bay. I would have known it was a Manics song without ever being told of the connection, its the sound which is so unique. The first chord structure and the opening line make it a Manics song despite Shirley singing it just like it was with Kylie.

I love James and his voice but 1 track out of 2 albums is fine by me.

Fine for me too. As much as I love James' singing, I always welcome experimentations, and I don't mind it uncludes people from outside the band.
