Of course we are, it was a last shot. It failed, no point in More Postcards From a Slighty Older Man now.

I guess it would have been like KYE after TIMT. They were annoyed by the huge success of TIMT, so they decided to make a weird record like KYE. Now they're probably going to try another shot at mass communication.

How is a number 3 album a failure? it could have been so much worse (look at the single)

The single failed and I'm sure at least Nicky is going to be disappointed that they didn't reach #1. It was their goal after all.

I don't think they will. As they've been saying, they threw the kitchen sink in for this album so I'm sure for the next one they'll do what was planned from the start: hopefully a more daring album, the "art for itself" kind.

If they really are gutted about this, then they probably put too much on being number 1. SATT never reached number 1 and they still deemed that whole campaign as a success; they still talk about how it re-energised them or whatever and that had a much stronger leading single than PFAYM. Number 3 is still respectable and whatever you think of Phil Collins and The Script, they clearly appeal to the masses more so than the Manics. It's hardly the end of the world.

In reality, it's not bad at all when you look at bands like The Charlatans nowadays, but it is a failure, a failure to get what they pushed for, and they and Sony will know it and be feeling it right now. Well, Sony won't be feeling it quite so bad, they've also got The Script on their books! |

I think they are more gutted this time because they weren't up against the Arctic Monkeys and they had actually made in roads into the medium that could help get them to #1 (Downloads). I guess its a case of getting so close to finally believe and then having it snatched away as soon as you do.

It probably didnt help that before it came out there were like 4 different release dates being touted by the press, some people probably thought it was coming out tomorrow

I'd get Happyfeet to troll a Maroon 5 forum.

Surely The Script's or Phil Collins' forum would be more obvious candidates

Nah, they beat Maroon 5 to highest new entry. It might now all be over for the Manics in terms of a commercial future, but commercial appeal is all Maroon 5 ever had going for them in the first place and now it's slipping away.
