Nick Naysmith hasn't played live with the band since about 2005.

His backing vocals are woeful.

This track has reduced me to tears on the first listen. It's beautiful and fragile. But it makes me miss my amazing granddad even more and I don't know if I can listen to it again for a second time just yet.

They are!

Richard Hawley's voice makes me think of Richard Burton for some reason. Think it's just the deep sound of his voice in comparison with James. Maybe that's what they were aiming for.

According to my iTunes I have listened to the song 37 times since yesterday. I love the tone and tempo of it - it has totally seeped into my consciousness.

I went for a long walk last night through Sofia Gardens in Cardiff and had the song on repeat. I find new things with each listen. The lyrics are beautiful and not as repetitive as the last few albums.

I don't mind it but after repeated listens it's not sticking.

I know! The night before it was released/announced I had a wee rant on here about the new era being the same old same old. And I still stand by that in terms of the gigs - personally I'm not excited about going to see them churn out the same 1 or 2 songs from each album - but the song, the lyric, and the artwork have struck a chord with me. I'm a big Manics loving sap.

Next time you're at a gig, pretend you're someone like me - who has still yet to see them play. Always foiled.
