Actually, Anthem For A Lost Cause and As Holy As The Soil have just shot up to a 9. Choking me up after reading Wire's comments about them!

As much as that is true, their albums could probably be grouped like this as if they were made by different bands:

Version 1: Generation Terrorists (Doesn't really fit with anything else they've done. Totally unique for them in that it sounds like a tribute album to other artists by a band who haven't quite found their feet).
Version 2: GATS, EMG, SATT.PFAYM (The commercial 'stadium rock' band)
Version 3: THB, KYE, JFPL (The 'alternative rock' band)
Version 4: TIMTTMY, LB, RTF (The 'soft atmospheric' band)

So the Manics are 4 bands in one really i think, which of course is a brilliant thing. Most artists for their time you'd probably just have the one version of (hi Oasis).

Actually the slow, grinding, defeated longing and utter misery of 'side 2' is quite draining...in a magnificent MSP way, of course. I can see why they put Manorbier in there for some lyric-free relief!

I've completed my 'listened to all the tracks once' report.

This Sullen Welsh Heart - 7/10
-It's... not bad. Could have a better ending but beggars can't be choosers.

Show Me The Wonder - 2/10
-What happens in the Neighbours theme tune should stay in the Neighbours theme tune.

Rewind The Film - 1/10
-The JDB bits are alright. The rest is someone outside of the band singing over the top of a song written by someone outside of the band. This isn't hip hop sampling, this is a waste of six minutes.

Builder of Routines - 6/10
-I can live without skipping this one while simultaneously having nothing to say about it.

4 Lonely Roads - 6/10
- Quite like this as a break from JDB singing like Chris Martin's granddad.

(I Miss The) Tokyo Skyline - 5/10
-This was going reasonably well in a Coldplay-do-this-better kind of way until the second verse repeated the first. I've warned them about this!

Anthem for a Lost Cause - 5/10
-The 'yours… cause' bit towards the end might be the cheesiest thing they've ever done. It'd be better if they hadn't PFAYM-ed the balls out of it with the production. Obvious second single. Depressingly obvious.

As Holy As The Soil - 2/10
-I'm normally a fan of Nicky tracks but can't quite get past there now being a line on a Manics album that goes "I love you so, won't you please come home". Then, to make matters worse, you're told it's about Richey.

3 Ways To See Despair - 4/10
-This one is ruined for me by it having nothing whatsoever to do with Stuart Adamson as was stated in the press release. It could be about anyone. The shift between first and third person doesn't help. Music is alright. The clip of the demo sounds more interesting.

Running Out Of Fantasy - 8/10
-I can't find much to fault with this one. Confused.

Manorbier - 5/10
- Good start, the rest never quite lives up to it.

30 Year War - 4/10
-Some of the lines make me think this should be about Operation Yewtree, or something else that's relevant today.

Does anyone think it doesn't really 'sound' like an album? Much like KYE, i'm not sure the songs really 'gel' together. That doesn't take away from the fact that it's clearly a very strong album...but there are so many musical styles thrown in it plays like a 'Greatest Hits' of albums we haven't yet heard.

Ok, think I've heard them all now... Too early to say too much, but immediate thoughts... Love the two with Cate and Lucy, love how Tokyo actually sounds like Tokyo, the fact James is still having to shoe-horn too many lyrics into his melodies is making me smile. Roll on Sunday...
