Needs more James. I am interested in hearing the whole album now though.

I like it. Been years since a new Manics track made me sit up. I like the parts with RH as well - reminds me of a Pulp song. Nice backing, simple and nostalgic lyrics.
You can play Manics Video Bingo with the vid though... repeated slow motion shots, tracking someone walking from the side, someone staring into the camera... HOUSE |

It's not that people are negative for the sake of it though - JFPL was released to some pretty serious acclaim on here.

Woah. For sheer shock factor- the new song is six minutes plus of a non-Manic singing over an obscure sixties instrumental, with a video of old people playing bingo- this is fucking gold. Ballsy move.
Pretty cool song, a clever 'sample' that both sounds like JDB could have written it but carries a bit of genuinely nostalgic weight through the use of some actual old, naive sounding music. I assume as an album tease they could have released something more straightforwardly attention grabbing but they've gone for something more 'wtf' intriguing instead. I wish the Manics were a bit less interested in old journals, postcards, films etcetera... but if you're going to evoke days gone by, hey, really go for it. You can have an interesting debate about the Axelrod co-write but in the greater scheme of all things music it's not a big deal, and the reason the Manics aren't going 'Axelrod is getting half the cash for this... here's our new song!!!' is because they as serious musicians know it's not actually a big deal. It must have been his twin brother (who happens to have the same name) I saw playing in Sydney a few nights ago.

Same production, recurring lyrical themes, same guitar sound as Let Robeson Sing. The only difference is an out of place celtic guitar solo (kudos though for trying) and a different singer for the majority of the song. It's a little bit different but nothing that leaves me on the edge of my seat. However it's not like they chose it as a single and every Manics album has to some degree fulfilled expectations, as a massive fan for many years I don't doubt that they will pull this one out of the bag.

I'm going to lol if this non-single ends up charting when the last actual single didn't.

It's well and truly stuck in my head now! I really like Mr Hawley's vocals on it and then James really gives it that belter edge as it soars! Love it!
Moaning Manix fans? Surely not?

I'm coming round to the idea that it's absolutely fantastic, a career highlight. After PFAYM, which was just horribly dull for the most part, I'm excited again.
It's just such a good idea done to near perfection. Usually when they try to describe a song or an album it turns out to be nothing like they say it's going to be. I don't understand the moaning about the Axelrod music or the lack of James vocals. Maybe it's an indie rock thing, because there are plenty of genres where liberal sampling and guest vocalists are the norm and nobody throws their toys out of the pram. To me it still sounds like the Manics, the lyrics are obviously Wire's. That people baulk at the idea of what they're doing with the different vocalists shows they're taking a risk, which means they're doing the right thing. Nobody really wants The Descent (Pages 3 & 4) do they? |
