30YW Was hyped so much so that it could only be a bit of a let down upon listening.
It's amazing though. Has the best chorus they've written since fuck knows when. |

i was scared to listen to 4 lonely roads after reading comments here.
I expected worst song ever by Manics. It turns out nothing is wrong with that one. After listening 2 times: Rewind the Film 3 Ways to see despair This sullen Welsh heart |

I don't get what's wrong with 4LR...i think its marvellous. It has a weird but apelling instrumentation. Its true that is the only song in the entire manics catalogue that is song almost in a 100% by a person outside the band but it still is a killer tune

First impressions:
01 This Sullen Welsh Heart 9 02 Show Me The Wonder 6 03 Rewind The Film 7 04 Builder of Routines 8 05 4 Lonely Roads 8 06 (I Miss The) Tokyo Skyline 7 07 Anthem For A Lost Cause 9 08 As Holy As The Soil (That Buries Your Skin) 5 09 3 Ways To See Despair 7 10 Running Out Of Fantasy 8 11 Manorbier 6 12 30 Year War 8 Dnt really hear the God only knows solo. Yeah the note progression is similar but different key and rhythm slightly different. Not a big deal anyway, as its hardly a central part of the song. However, as Holy as the Soil sounds way like Ash Shining Light from the first few bars - anyway it's way too generic for my liking - its pleasant and tuneful but sounds like a dozen other songs, hence the Lowish rating. A Wire composition I'm guessing seeing he's singing it? Last edited by cameron33; 12-09-2013 at 06:33. |

Quality wise I'd say its better than PFAYM, KYE and SATT. Probably on a par with GATS and Lifeblood. worse than the others.

The problem with 4 lonely Roads is that even musically it's not interesting and the vocals don't add up to a great song.

Hello all, haven't been on in ages but been lurking the last few days in excitement for the album.
Have to say I'm loving it, I've heard all the tracks twice. 'This Sullen Welsh Heart' is beautiful as is 'Running Out Of Fantasy'. Glad to hear they're doing what feels right and not what they feel is expected of them. I like PFAYM but understand that it's a bit too calculated. Roll on Newport tomorrow. Should be epic

This album is getting better with every listen. The only weak spot for me right now is Monorbier...but thats only because I'm comparing it with instrumental greats like Ostpolitik, The Vorticists and Horses Under Starlight.
The craft and art of RTF is really quite brilliant. Although I like their commercial albums like EMG and PFAYM, I get the impression that this is an alum they had to make for themselves regardless of how it sells and that really works for them now.

I like 4 Lonely Roads apart from all that "trapped inside this skin, can't love back in" bollocks. The Wire is a married man with children, close friends and family. Why does he have to keep pretending he's a miserable old cunt like Morrissey who can't stand people?
Yes, I've changing my mind about the As Holy As The Soil lyrics. At least they're honest even if they do sound like Adele. |

Only listened to it once through the radio plays. I gave the songs an average score of 5/10 after one listen. It might end up higher when the CD arrives. If it reaches 7, I don't know how I'll cope. |

What's to say he can't feel like that, in spite of all he has? It doesn't make sense to make stuff up for the sake of a persona on an album that's an unflinching and brutally honest dissection of self.

I really like '3 Ways To See Despair' until that bloody John Lennon line drops and pushes me right out of it.
