Much rather have an original song. This looks a bit desperate.

THIS. What's the fucking point? I'm sure you can spare one new song to promote your compilation. Just sums up how lazy they've become in all aspects

It will be a passionless retreading of past glories - probably including shit edits of songs fans love. I don’t own Forever Delayed. It would take something pretty special to make me run out and buy this.

In defence of Forever Delayed, it has two original songs on at least. One of which is rather good and the other is perhaps unfairly maligned. And it's quite unashamedly a best of. It does what it says on the tin really.
I'm not against another compilation, and I can think of plenty I wouldn't mind seeing, but a singles one doesn't do it for me |

Door to the River and There by the Grace of God are two of only a handful of Manics songs I actually listen to any more.

TBH, new songs on compilation albums tend to be ignored by bands a few years down the line anyway (can think of only a few exceptions) so might as well just chuck a cover in there rather than doom some possibly amazing original tracks to that oblivion (like what happened with TBTGOG and Door to the River). Not that getting a spot on a proper album necessarily saves songs from that limbo with this band.
In any case, that This Is the Day is pretty forgettable elevator music pop, hopefully the Manics can inject something interesting into it.

So with Journals they didn't release any singles, despite having at least two potential crackers. With Postcards, they didn't manage to write any good singles, but out out three of the songs as singles anywy. And now they're releasing a cover as a single.. :rolleyes

Uhm, R.E.M.'s best ''In Time'' had two new songs (well, one was not that new): Bad Day and Animal, and both made lots of appearances in the setlists in the past years.

So it's a singles box set with a random cover on it? If this is fact I'm disappointed. No new song means no no promotion for the song on music TV cos no video, probably no radio play cos who cares really about a cover song of a song probably not many know about and no promotion or tour means little sales, so maybe the band can't arsed at all with this but surely Sony would want it to sell and push it? Who knows. I'll get it as a belated birthday present I think, hopefully got a nice DVD wth some interviews, videos and a nice big booklet

Yeah, I said there's been exceptions. R.E.M.'s one of those.

It's just another cash-in compilation album from the record company. I don't see where band effort should have to come into it and for once I'm not going to moan at them about laziness. If they don't want to write anything for it, then fair enough.
Besides, cover version or a new Manics song that sounds like a poor rip off of someone else's song, it's all the same thing. |

The only thing I'd be interested in is if there were boxsets of individual singles with all of the b-sides - mostly because I've not got a lot of the singles.
I'm not really bothered by another hits compilation to be honest.

They're both a damn sight better than anything from PFAYM as well.

Even though it's unforgivably lazy to do a cover to pimp a greatest hits (a classic case of Larry David's Double Transgression theory*) it's a song quite a lot of people will already know (ie. Radio 2 listeners, old folk) but never bought. So nostalgia, the "everyman" lyric and hopefully a big "JDB lift" on the chorus who knows could be a freak hit.
(* Imagine a dog that has peed on the floor. He has been caught with his leg lifted, and is being herded to the yard to be disciplined. The dog knowing he is already in trouble snatches the plate of ham off the table on his way out. The dog is theorizing that since he is already in trouble and will have to suffer a punishment, why not get another transgression out of the way at the same time, resulting in one punishment rather than the two he would get if he snatched the ham later in the day.) |
