I love this song now, I liked it and still think it needs more Jimbo but there is a lot going on it and I reckon its the best thing they have done since JFPL.
Hope they do release the other video this week 'cos Im currently in Manics mode and need more!! |

Just listened to the Axelrod song. I almost laughed at how much it was the same. Odd choice of song to pilfer.

After an initial WTF on hearing the first few bars I have totally fallen in love with the song. Sounds as if it has come off the Pulp Fiction soundtrack. Brilliant to hear them doing something a bit different. James chorus makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck. Brilliant stuff.

I quite like it, but it needs more James singing in my opinion. I think it'd have been better if it was just JDB singing. Still, real good track all the same.

I dunno, I guess if you are into British Sea Power and Divine Comedy etc. Then this song sort of fits into that for being dreamy and atmospheric, this song is really good. Probably fits in with people who have mature enough depth in music tastes. For people who just want rock/metal (one-eyed) then it's never going to please.

My brain has totally accepted this as a manics song even with Hawley singing 90% of the song, hopefully it'll do the same with 4 Lonely Roads

My 2p on it...
First play I didn't like it, not one bit. Not enough JDB, too much Hawley. I don't mind RH as such, it's just I would prefer JDB. The Axelrod issue, there's no debate, it's pilfered. Not a cover as such, they've simply taken the Axelrod tune, and added some very sweet/dark lyrics. After playing a couple of times it has now implanted itself into my brain, I find I'm humming it and reaching for the ipod to play it again. It's odd. It isn't standard MSP material, it IS something different. I've warmed to it and it is now on my MSP playlist. The previous comments about the melancholic feel of the whole package (not just the music) are spot on. I like. Major improvement on PFAYM and SATT, but very, very random. Looking forward to the RTF album now, I wasn't before; I was thinking of it as something to get through so I can have the krautrock noisy album promised for next year.

My only issue with it was just that it would have been nice to have been aware of it before listening to Rewind The Film.

*not moaning see* I bought the first two David Axelrod albums as a result of RTF, so I'm actually grateful to Manics for the introduction. *not moaning see*

Does anyone know - is the video directed by Seamus Murphy? It reminded me a lot of his Let England Shake videos for Peej but haven't found any credits yet.
I really liked the song (and video) as soon as I heard it, genuinely brilliant. I haven't been this surprised / blown away like this by a lead Manics track in 15 years. I'd even say it works better with Hawley & minimal JDB, I can't see it working as well with James doing the full lead vocal. Just need them to play the Midlands now. Get thee to the Civic Hall, Wire! |

Looks like sampling could be common on this record
@simon_price01: Another teaser fact about the new @Manics album: it samples "The Dust Blows Forward And The Dust Blows Back" by Captain Beefheart.
