Here's my go at the Impact Demo version :
[Sweary intro, assume it's studio chatter?]
'You f###ing piece of sh*t, sometimes ... to have'

We used to feel some of the sun
No bullshit (not pushing?) that can drag us down
We never felt like kissing dirt\death ?
[No idea on this line]

Chorus

Feel as dead as ....
The west scratches onto my skin
Chains of sugar kept me there\dead ?
.... or\all out of love

Dead flowers in the rubbish bin
With needles ,flesh and cola tins
Debris shines through broken glass
Torn reflections of burnt out trash

That’s about what I had - not the clearest of songs to work out!

My best effort:

Verse 1

Roses in the hospital
We used to feel some of that sun
Roses in the hospital
Now push it up and drag us down
Roses in the hospital
We never felt like kiss and [tell?]
Roses in the hospital
All myths have truely ruined you

Chorus

Verse 2

Roses in the hospital
A child's voice always shut it down
Roses in the hospital
A rose may trample under foot / on the floor
Roses in the hospital
A scene that cheers and withers fast
Roses in the hospital
A cheek to cheer the [stanley knife?]

Verse 3

Roses in the hospital
Dead flowers in the rubbish bin
Roses in the hospital
With needles, flesh, and cola tins
Roses in the hospital
[pick?] up debris through broken glass
Roses in the hospital
Tear up reflections of burned out trash, burned out trash

----

I've probably got lots of that wrong, but it's looking like an interesting lyric if its anywhere near accurate. It reads a lot like a poetic allusion to Richey (with his rose tattoo...) during one of his hospital visits, and maybe it was changed as much as it was because it was a bit too on-the-nose in its original state.

--

Edit: Something I love about the demo is that the final verse sounds like JDB's first attempt at morphing from a rock song, into something much more mellow. I watching songwriters try ideas, not quite pull them off first time, but then return to them after developing their skills, and absolutely nailing it, which it looks like is what he did between this and 4st 7lbs.

Great point about 4st7lb, it's a very similar tonal shift isn't it ? You've also got a lot closer then I got on the other demo I'd say (although I do hear 'cola tins' on both of them but perhaps I just have a sweet tooth!).

Would agree that's it seems to be about about a specific self abuse incident in this early version (although the final version obviously has a lot of general self abuse imagery too). Possibly the 4real incident or something very similar.

You're spot-on. I'll fix that bit in my transcription now.

On the point of the final version, do you think Richey contributed some of those lines, or was it maybe Nicky writing from Richey (or maybe a fictionalised Richey's) POV? Just wondering, because a couple of them stand out as very Richey-ish - "stub cigarettes out on my arm" being something he used to do, and "try to pull my fingernails out" being very similar to the line from Peeled Apples.

I think that's pretty close.

I would offer the following lines as I heard them (not 100% sure myself!):

V1
*Now pushing up can drag us down
*We never felt like kissing dirt

V2
*A rose that trampled underfoot
*A cheek touching a stanley knife

V3
*I grip debris though broken glass

is that something you've been notified of, or something you've been chasing up?

no sign of any vinyl for me so far, but then I haven't contacted anyone about it yet either: don't know if they can already identify whose orders have been missed, or they're just operating on a contact response basis..?

seen absolutely no notifications or acknowledgement of any issues so far from the store or the band (not that it's their problem to rectify) - giving it until Friday before I get all Watchdog on them.

When I emailed them on Friday, my order status magically updated with a DPD tracking number.

And here it is

Oh yes it's definitely time to tell them, might mean you get part of what you ordered (i.e. at least some vinyl rather than none at all which is what some people say they got)

After deciding the price on the official site was ridiculous, I bought the vinyl from my local indie.

Then I decided I'd regret not having the book/CD set, too, so I ordered that from Amazon yesterday (so I could get the Autorip of everything while the book sits in the decontamination zone).

Everything looks lovely, fair play. And I confess I don't have much of an issue with the remastering on first snippets, and without comparing to the original CD.
