Why do most threads end up with the discussion of them ending when there hasn't been even a hint at splitting? For crying out loud there's 2 new albums coming out, more of a sign of their productivity rather than 'let's just fulfil the album deal and go' (even though they've signed a new one only last year). Just get excited about new manicsness rather than ringing the death knell

Let's be honest they had to have come pretty close to splitting up circa 95'.

What would qualify as going "out with a whimper" in rock and roll terms exactly?

If they called it quits after Lifeblood?

What would it mean to us the fans if they do end on bang, is it preferable to us?

or do we want to see them end on a "whimper" if let's face we get something out of that record which we undoubtedly would.

As an album, maybe JFPL would have been the best way to go out but we don't know what they've got left in them yet.

As a complete career retrospective, the O2 show would definitely have been the best way to go out (as crazy as it sounds).

The only way they would go out with a whimper is if they didn't do anything for 4 years and then called it a day. As long as they're releasing music and touring, we should be more than happy with that! They've done more in just over 20 years than most bands do in 35/40 years.

In their favour, they enjoy playing live and writing/recording new material. We already know this.

However, for me there are more things that go against the theory that they might carry on. Firstly, they are in their mid-40s now and most likely by the time they have material to release they'll be approaching 50. With Nicky's back problems etc, I can't see them touring as much either. Secondly, James has moved back to Wales to bring up his family and settle down. The one advantage of them all being in close proximity of each other and having their own studio means there is no pressure on them to get stuff out. The fact that they're all family orientated individuals is a big thing. Finally, we all know that they've been close to splitting a few times already. If the next two albums flop then they might just call it a day.

Bottom line is this: Let's enjoy them while they're still around and stop moaning.
I don't really see the point in lots of uninformed speculation in general, people say they are gonna split all the time, and no one really knows. I don't think 'we know they've been close to splitting a few times' is really that accurate...we just don't know really what goes on in the band to say stuff like that. I agree with the bottom line though.

Well, you know, what they say - "live every day of your life as if it was the last". In the case of the Manics - "release every album as if it was your last".

From what the band have been saying and their setlist quotes of late, I'd say there's absolutely nothing to worry about. They seem very reinvigorated and determined, and happy in themselves and what they're doing. FMFs always with our bleak abysses of despair. IT'S ALL GOOD PEOPLE. NEW ALBUMS! NICE THINGS! YAY!

Agree with Richey that JFPL would've been "the time" if ever there was going to be one, because at least we'd have been spared PFAYM and all that ensued...

10 studio albums (plus 2 greatest hits albums), 2 albums to come and nearly 40 singles. I've lost count around the amount of gigs they must have done. It's pretty damn prolific. Maybe 35/40 years was an excessive figure but they have certainly outdone their peers with the amount of material they've released.
