Quelle surprise they didn't like it - particularly the snooty journo woman who "NEVER liked them, no never not ever, honest Guv, not even in a youthful phase of fully or anything M'lud".

Interesting minor comment though does singing "Rewind the film again" imply that it has already been rewound before already? It doesn't seem such a Herculean feat if it already been done before at least once.

I think the 'again' strengthens the feeling of lament, the sadness in the track, that this isn't the first time, probably one of many. I think it links with the JG Ballard quote they were throwing around on PFAYM - 'memory is the greatest gallery in the world and I can play an endless archive of images'.

Time has passed. The euphoria of the release of “Rewind The Film” has slight waned for me. So now I’ve been listening to the song a bit more closely and still loving it. Some of the comments saying how those of an older age can perhaps relate to the song more are quite valid. I don’t want to take away anything from younger listeners, but for me (being the same age as Sean) it really does strike that chord of the passing of time. The remembering of past friendships, youth and moments passed. All times before the 40 hour working week sucks you dry. Seeing what creativity you once had dry up. Learning that one possibly has more years behind them than in front. For “Rewind The Film”, it’s the golden, dripping melancholy that I can relate to. Nicky has done it better than the flawed PFAYM. There it was celebrating 20 years being together. Not a celebration of the past, but a celebration of survival and friendship.

The video is a simple thing. Beautifully shot. Again, not taking anything away from those of a younger age, but for anyone who comes from a small town and has seen diaspora take place. The demise of local industry, community. Every image of that working men’s club I can relate to. Whether it was the local Returned Men’s Service Club. The Working Men’s Club. Commercial Travellers Club. They all shared similarities. For me it was my late father’s Masonic Club where I learnt to play pool. Learnt how to behave at a bar and in a club. (No hats!) Learning to respect the old bloke on the stool. How to talk to others. Playful ribbing. From the video it’s the photos of the fallen, the hearing aid, and the comfortable shoes which get the biggest pang of memory inside me. Every club in every country had typed reminder notices pinned all over the place. Clubs like these still exist in New Zealand, but they are fighting to survive. The glory days of clubs being popular has ended. The death knell has already rung for many. Total respect to the band for commissioning such a wonderful video and of course of not going down the traditional route of a glamour video.

Oh, here's a Richard Hawley story that people might not know about. You can blame Morrissey, or praise him as it has to do with him. After the Smiths split Morrissey was looking for a new band. Richard Hawley auditioned. Everything was going really well. Then Richard started singing. Morrissey turned to Richard and asked him "What are you singing for?" There was only going to be room for one singer in Morrissey's band and that was himself. True story. Morrissey's loss. Manics gain.

I’m really positive about this upcoming album. It’s going to be a golden era for the band. It might be just be their best. But we still have April 2014 looming.

Just heard the Axelrod track... I think I prefer it. Better that it's half the length and excludes the real mess of a 12-string hammer-on run, which other than the vocal is the Manics' main addition to the track.

Still really like the Manics version though (I'd say it's an 8/10 sort of track to me which is fine for an album track) and I think they've retained the melancholy of the original whilst giving it a bit more life, but it is looong. It was bugging me what it vaguely reminded me of and I think it's probably Streets of Fire by Bruce, probably only the rhythm of the melodic shifts between the two chords in the intro - I find myself singing "I live now, only with strangers - I talk to, only strangers" over that bit.

Nice post. I agree with the comments about the video. I may not have too many direct coloration memories like you do, but the video is shot in such a way that it evokes that response in me. I'm weirdly fascinated about what it must have been like to grow up in those small valleys towns, and I think that video captures what I *guess* it might have been like (or what it is like now) very nicely.

I have a similar response to the Stereophonic's album 'Word Gets Around' which covers the same thing, and paints a lot of vivid mental pictures for me through the lyrics. I really love that album.

However...

Yes, I agree. It could definitely be much tighter.

I think it's a great song. At first I thought there was no way that Richard Hawley should have the opening vocals on a Manics song, but it seems right to me now on this song.

The general consensus that James doesn't have enough vocal time is true for me as well. I do look forward to JDB's vocals on the song and he's sounding the most epic he has in a while on the song for me, which makes it a shame that there's not more from him. The vocal allocations don't quite make it the "duet" that it was described as.

Surely what the 6 Music guy says is solid constructive criticism for any aspiring lyric writer, never mind one who's been doing it for over 20 years.

Quote:
Rewind the film again
Rewind the film again
Rewind the film once more
Rewind the film once more
Rewind the film once more
Rewind the film once more
Rewind the film again
Rewind the film again
Rewind the film once more
Rewind the film once more
Rewind the film once more
Rewind the film once more
So rewind the film again
Yes rewind the film again
The song asks for the film to be rewound 14 times, 8 of which come with the promise of that time being the last.

Repetition is nothing new for Nicky's writing (or my moaning) but we've never had to put up with it for 6 and a half minutes and for "once more" to be the offender.

If the repetition is removed, it shows the other lines in a much better light.

Quote:
Rewind the film again
I'd love to see my joy my friends
So I can fall asleep content
Turn back the pages of my books
I want the world to see it all
I want to feel small

Lying in my mothers arms
Playing my old records
Hoping that they'll never stop
I want to see it all
Never want to let it go
Never gonna let you down

There is too much heart break
In the nothing of the now
Let me hide under the sheets
And celebrate the boredom
With the radio on

I want to feel small
Holding on my father's hands
I want the world to see all the love and security
My childhood dreams
But now I am a busted flush
Waiting for the night to come

Yes rewind the film again
So I can fall asleep content
But what I really want to know is… what does Claude from The Apprentice make of this song?
