TLORN sums up everything that's gone wrong with the Manics. They think to come back sounding different they can just get a different producer in, but the songwriting itself remains unchanged, and to me TLORN is the same old formulaic shite as Ocean Spray. Now some of you will say it sounds nothing like Ocean Spray. And that's the point. On the surface it sounds nothing like Ocean Spray, it sounds like James wrote a new song, despite doing everything that Ocean Spray does right down to the soundbite at the end and the flourishes after the chrous.
TLORN might have been alright as a single if it had anything going for it other than different production. It absolutely didn't. You need more than a synth to sound fresh. When it came to recording JFPL, didn't Steve Albini say he had to tell them he doesn't have an 'In Utero button'? It wouldn't surprise me if they asked him bluntly if he does. They've turned into the indie Simon Cowell. I hope all my moaning has gone some way to help them finally realise this. Their talk of being inspired by Abbey Road for LP10 gives me faith that the penny has finally dropped, even if they can't look beyond The Beatles for imaginative arrangements. |

Ocean Spray isn't formulaic. Not to me anyway.

hmmmmmmm. I like TLORN on the album but live its a bit.......................... the other two songs were great. I hate that flying V tho'.. James looks a bit of twatt with it..he needs to be 6 inches taller wearing spandex and big eighties hair for it to work

It's alright. I liked the music video a lot. And the songs OK,love the guitar solo. It's fun. But it'll never get back to the live setup, same for all of Lifeblood sadly except 1985 every now and then.

Not too bad a video, just looks silly for James to have guitar during it.

I kind of forget what my point was when I made this thread... but basically I love the conflict of Lifeblood. It's so different from anything else released in 2004, and so different from KYE, or anything else the Manics have ever done. It's almost perfect in places. But then, it isn't perfect... it's a complete mess live especially, and James looks so uncomfortable playing the songs. He's longing for the safety of powerchords.

I'm sure me and sculptureofabloke have hoped for something like this over a pint or two in the past.

If James feels uncomfortable playing stuff off Lifeblood then I really think Jeff Lynne needs to have a word in his ear. I'm sure ELO would've made room for slowies like Starlight in their setlists as well as the more thunderous guitar stuff. Variety is the spice of life remember!

I wouldn't bank on that. Call me crazy, but I highly doubt they'd care about your criticism of their production techniques. That is, if they are even aware of your critiques.
